Oooh I can make ssh kitten to change kitty theme for each host independently..
Where was this my whole 'oops I ran it on the wrong machine'-life???
New account (here since 2019)
I am a PhD Candidate. I have been active in the graduate student union with whom we managed to get the minimum stipend amounts increased and a group formed for student field safety.
I work on #ArcticOceanography

Buying a spinning drive was not on my list of things but apparently I can't afford the equivalent solid state at the moment so here we are. Need to reinstall my machine because the dual boot is messing with my ability to run firmware updates. And I don't use my 'just in case' windows partition anyway.
To systemd or not to systemd, is of course now the question. I loathe it but also it's a losing battle
@mplouffe RA's are maybe still more expensive than Claude (even though woefully underpaid?)
NGL, I do love snow and this is the first time since leaving Manitoba that I've seen so much of it.
I say this though, from the safety of having a home, adequate blankets and throws and warm jackets and boots. My heart breaks for the many people who don't have this luxury, as it did in Winnipeg.
How my students taught me that Github’s monopoly is hurting the Open Source ecosystem even more than I thought.
I published a paper from a first-person perspective about how features on #Mastodon leave enormous loopholes for harassing behavior (OA, 🔗 ⬇️ )
I came over here in the Nov22 wave & never left, but I no longer invite people to join without giving (loud) fair warning about drawbacks. I can't in good faith recommend Mdon to anyone who's more likely to be on the receiving end of harassing behavior
We have proof of concept, but the stakes are *urgent* to improve!

Can anyone recommend sex ed resources and/or tips and advice from personal experience regarding intimacy with folks who have connective tissue disorders?
More broadly, is there some kind of information hub concerning adaptations disabled folks can make to keep ourselves safe and comfy when getting down? Don't inspire me to make one myself, I'm currently recovering from burnout!
@khleedril @sundogplanets Yeah makes sense. It does conveniently and accidentally map onto the max for Quadrantids (which I don't think I've personally seen).
@khleedril @sundogplanets Someone might! Not sure who all do solar based calendars instead of lunar, but am sure someone somewhere does
I have never seen the word "perihelion" in a weather warning before! Wow.
I'm totally saving this to show my students why basic astro 101 is very practical sometimes (...ok maybe the prairies do not have a tidal flooding problem...but... perihelion!!)
@sundogplanets Tomorrow! (I like celebrating when the sun is closest to Earth (annually)
In the early 1830s, global temperatures mysteriously dropped in a multi-year cold snap, which was determined to have been triggered by sulfur aerosols from an eruption. The source volcano remained unknown, but a new study uses various geochemical detective work to find the source: Zavaritski on Simushir Island, a remote, uninhabited island in the Kuril Islands, near Russia and Japan. Makes you wonder what other poorly studied volcanoes are just waiting to pop!
