I flew from YVR to KEF. I had a long layover between 9:15am and leaving on another airline at 12:10am the next day. As the disabled passenger assistance was hauling my bags on a cart, I saw the underside of my bag and what Icelandair baggage crew had done to it. Now I was in deep shit.

It was already a hard itinerary with this layover long enough to be more tiring, but not long enough to justify an expensive hotel night. Now I couldn't even go anywhere independently because no wheels. #Ableism

Finally got a free moment to completely unload on Icelandair customer service because they really did suggest I take the luggage they broke (that I as a disabled person could no longer take anywhere because THEY BROKE TWO WHEELS and ripped off part of the shell) to a "licensed repair shop".

While playing at the local accessibility playground with my child, I noticed a sw*stika recently painted on the ground.

I saw a woman who used arm brace crutches today. She was not totally reliant on them and I thought it likely she did not identify as having a disability.

Which made me reflect again on how systemic ableism works. By conflating age with disability, it strengthens ableism. It allows people who age into disability to remain identified with abled ppl and therefore actually defend the system that will now be inaccessible to them. Probably even apologize for "being a burden". #Ableism #Disability

Imagine thinking the veterans that served your country should be denied healthcare because of their marital status or political affiliation?

According to an article in the Guardian, that’s exactly what Trump is doing.

A new executive order allows healthcare workers to refuse to treat veterans who are unmarried or Democrats. They can refuse on political or marital grounds that they “disagree with”

The healthcare facilities have also been given permission to refuse to hire those whose political affiliation or union status they disagree with.

This is fascism and political retaliation rolled into one.

Veterans deserve better.

@chirpbirb Where you're most likely to see this sort of reasoning: The HR representative assigned to you to manage your workplace accommodations. I have never dealt with so much ableism in my life as when I made a formal accommodations request with a signed letter from my doctor. The most infuriating thing about it was, they're not accommodations that cost any extra effort or money. They just don't want to give their employees anything nice or helpful unless they legally *have* to, and then it will be done begrudgingly and with the narrowest possible interpretation of the doctor's words.

I really love seeing other people point out that intelligence and intellectual disability have *nothing* to do with the worth of a human being. I've said it many, many times, and it's hugely important to me that people see the truth of it. Too often, I see people who would be mortified to say something ableist, causally shaming someone for making poor or immoral choices by calling them an IQ-related slur -- without even batting an eye.

BTW - I'm not trying to cap on those who boarded with assistive services on the way in, but declined them on the way out. Ambulatory wheelchair users exist.

Most ppl on the flight were Albanian and probably familiar with what their choices were and saved spoons for taking the stairs to get to baggage claim faster. I had to wait for everyone to deboard and cleaners were already busy on the airplane.

I talk about this so you know some of what it's like for wheelchair users.

ICE agents cover their faces with gators, yet in Nassau County you can be arrested for wearing an N95.

It’s not about health. It’s not about crime. It’s about protecting the surveillance state and punishing people with disabilities.

Thankfully no one got arrested for masking, but the fact that an unidentified ICE agent hiding their entire face could legally detain you just for protecting your health is the height of fascism and eugenics.
