Even if the new text of the climate conference is hardly a step forward from Glasgow two years ago, the number of countries that have committed to net zero has increased significantly since then: in 2021 there were just 40, and now there are 101, accounting for 80% of greenhouse gas emissions. Much more important, however, is a NetZero in national laws of 26 countries that together account for 17.7% of GHGs.

The current version of the fossil fuel phase-out negotiations is surprisingly bad even for pessimists. No more "phase out" available; "... best available science, the IPCC's 1.5 pathways and the principles and provisions of the Paris Agreement" deleted.

Azerbaijan wins regional backing to host COP29 climate summit. The decision on a host had been held up after Russia said it would veto any European Union country's bid to be the host.

Der neue Text der GlobalStockTake-Erklärung auf der Klimakonferenz in Dubai ist noch weit von einer Einigung entfernt. Statt die Optionen für die Minister zu reduzieren und zu klären, wurde der Text auf 27 Seiten aufgebläht. Vor allem die besonders umstrittene Passage zum Ausstieg aus den fossilen Energien ist noch länger und umfangreicher geworden. Insgesamt gibt es nun acht verschiedene Versionen des Ausstiegs.
