I like writing #SciFi and #fantasy stories. I write for pleasure and probably never will get published.
I have simple tastes and write simple stories.
I like my garden, all animals (especially my dog), all plants, science, the ocean and Canada. I'm German but write mostly in English for practice.
TERFs, fascists, antisemites get blocked. Overgeneralizing boomer-bashers too.

#WritersCoffeeClub 22. How do you make a location you’ve never visited feel ‘real’ for the reader?

I won't claim that I do... but the other places I write about seem rather real to me.

Short of writing a travelogue, I think mentioning occasional telling details helps.

I have not traveled as much as I would have liked: I lost the ability to safely eat unfamiliar food, and then Covid came along some years later... but I have traveled, and seen things, more than some people do.

#WritersCoffeeClub 22. How do you make a location you’ve never visited feel ‘real’ for the reader?

I translate old German folk tales, so that happens all the time - these tales feature numerous identifiable real world locations, many of which still exist.

So what I do is hunt down real world descriptions of these sites, including Wikipedia entries if they exist, and summarize some of those details in my own words. Wikimedia Commons also sometimes has images of these places, which I link to as well. I _hope_ that this provides sufficient context for these tales, as the stories themselves usually assume an audience already familiar with the area.

Of course, if my Patreon gets popular enough to finance a full-fledged lifestyle as an adventurer-folklorist, I could visit far more of these locations than I already have (hint, hint...).

22 May: How do you make a location you’ve never visited feel ‘real’ for the reader?

I concentrate on one or two sensations or something that is special and let them fill in the blanks. Everyone has probably been to a forest. They don't need to know about every single tree, unless it houses a magical squirrel.

#WritersCoffeeClub 5/22: How do you make a location you’ve never visited feel ‘real’ for the reader?

I write fantasy. Neither me nor my readers will ever be able to "visit" those locations, except by seeing them in our minds.

I don't like using a lot of description, either, but I try to add something for all senses: sight, hearing, smells, foods, weather...

All of that takes second place to the action, though, and the general sense of a place. It seems to work.

#WritersCoffeeClub 22. locations

I think that for portraying locations you have not visited, it can help to have visited a lot of different kinds of locations. In late October 2010, I toured the CERN particle accelerator site in Switzerland... and then a few days later, on Halloween, I was touring the ancient walled city of Fez, Morocco (which still has its walls AND is still a living city. It did not feel as drowned by tourists as some other UNESCO sites I've visited).

22. If you could magically write a new genre really well, which genre would you choose?

I write fantasy, which covers just about anything you could imagine, by definition. It is often associated with ‘swords and sorcery’ type works, but of course there are many variations. I like the freedom it gives to do just about anything.
Can I please magically write in *this* genre really well? I don’t need a new one… 😉

#WordWeavers 22. If you could magically write a new genre really well, which genre would you choose?

What do you mean by new? Entirely new? I want to relaunch1930s-style Weird Tales (Supernatural, emphasizing strangeness)

Existing: Well, I just launched a Steampunk serial, so can't use that one. I don't want, I am.

So lets go with Hard Boiled Detective - Raymond Chandler style only with a hard bitten Dyke PI.

We could start with solving the "Black Dahlia case," or the murder of "William Desmond Taylor" or who really killed "Virginia Rappe."

If you could magically write a new genre really well, which genre would you choose?

Does this mean "write in a genre new to me"? Or "invent a completely new genre"? Am I overthinking this question?

I'd love a formal mashup genre that includes all the elements you find in my stories: fantasy, scifi, horror, romance, comedy, tragedy, parody, environmentalism, animal rights, cultural critique, politics.

Then I could just easily label it on the vendor sites & move on. 😆

#WordWeavers 5/22: If you could magically write a new genre really well, which genre would you choose?

Romantasy.

I mean, I'm close with the Wolves, but... Romantasy is really booming right now, and being able to have another, well-selling series along those lines might actually, finally make me visible.

And then buying covers would no longer be a pain...

Answer to " Day 21: Tell us one truth and two lies about your creative work."

The one truth is #3. I play stringed instruments. I started with piano, picked up guitar, mandolin and ukelele much later, and erhu (Chinese violin) as a heritage learner.

I don't write romance and YA books, mostly fantasy and sci-fi (though I guess I give off that vibe? 😂 ) and man, I WISH I was trained in classical paining.

That sounds better. I hope the frustration goes away soon. 💙

@Ink_Soul Don't we all do that when we make something?
I don't want to endlessly talk you into something you don't want to do, but I think that maybe you're a bit too harsh on yourself.

@AlexCorby #ScribesAndMakers 5/22: Which creative activities do you engage in (almost) every day?

Practicing sleight-of-hand. Since, after a few decades of learning, I know enough about the art to improvise and devise my own fresh approaches and techniques (sometimes, a whole new concept!), I find this meditative and creative, focusing and exercising my mind at the same time.

@ellenmorrisprewitt

Fabulous!
I'm one of these people who would congratulate acquaintances, neighbours or friends (but not total strangers) on new or interesting earrings, hairdo, glasses and outfit. Sometimes I get strange looks and a mumbled Thank you. But most often a delighted Thanks, you noticed! We should do that a lot more often.

#ScribesAndMakers Which creative activities do you engage in (almost) every day?

I get dressed. I'm an artist in clothing, outfits being one of my favorite creative mediums. I invent, I extemporize. I amuse and delight myself; when I look in the mirror, I tell myself I've done a good job. I'm validated by compliments; I'm disappointed if I emerge from the house and no one comments on my fabulous earrings that are PERFECT for my outfit. Life is more than simply not being naked.

I also write.
