Need to take into account possible #conflict and #injustice dimensions of #climate response at the outset rather than after it manifests. I'm arguing in this #SIPRI interview for proactive integration of just and peaceful transition objectives across climate steps because so imperative to get it right the first time! youtu.be/q2SDJz1dtsQ

State of integration on #defense #development #diplomacy through the US Global Fragility Act broken down usefully by Liz Hume of the Alliance for Peacebuilding on #JustSecurity. Progress toward working differently on conflict affected and fragile contexts aimed first at 9 countries but meant to be USG-wide approach. Climate not included as much as could but many internal players recognizing need to include justsecurity.org/85897/the-glo

"Environment of Peace is a must-read for policymakers and practitioners and something students of environmental security might like to share with interested laypersons." Flagging book review of 3 new environment security pubs including our 2022 SIPRI Environment of Peace report. Rita Floyd of Birmingham knows the topic well and situates all three in this new Sage journal Environment and Security. Pleased to be part of the editorial board. journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/

One of our excellent students at Ohio University and our MS Environmental Studies Program. Smart is digging into foreign assistance for renewable energy in Nigeria. Has been great having him at the Voinovich School given all the experience he brings to the table. ohio.edu/voinovich-school/stud

Questions around #ecologicalsecurity as distinct from #environmentalsecurity or #climatesecurity have historically not gotten the same sustained attention from those of us working in the research and policy realms. Glad
Rod Schoonover & Dan Smith for helping fill this gap with this "Five Urgent Questions on Ecological Security"

Ohio University gets a shout out for #climate friendly food #composting on campus in @washingtonpost. Story better than reported as my Voinovich School colleague Sarah Davis is using anaerobic biodigestion to produce energy from it as well. Ton of other climate resources on campus to make it attractive to students choosing universities. Always more to do & better ways to do it but we'll take the shout out washingtonpost.com/climate-sol

@GreeningScience @sethbaum Thanks Diane & Seth for thoughtful remarks. Indeed development is commonly dropped but often same Brundtland definition is used. The Exxon exec using virtually word for word Brundtland but Politico not flagging where that came from was what prompted me to write Politico w/ context & sign of problem, not progress. And dropping development may also be downgrading dev imperative for poorer countries. Maybe better fit for those who have basic needs already met

35 years on many of us still using the Brundtland definition of #sustainability. Sign of strength or weakness? Flexible, resilient term or meaningless because everyone comfortable with using it? Appreciate @politico Long Game newsletter including some of my takes on recent collection of definitions they featured. politico.com/newsletters/the-l

Getting down to brass tacks in Montreal with #CBD biodiversity negotiations. Re-upping short piece with Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim and Jรผrg Staudenmann as part of the SIPRI Environment of Peace Initiative. Today (Wednesday) at 19:00 GMT+2 or 12 noon EDT, what promises to be a practical discussion of charting a course for needed #ClimateChange that is just and peaceful. Addressing potential for #conflict in essential climate responses and avoiding #backdraft key. Makes both tactical and strategic sense to address up front rather than after the fact when it can delay & undercut transitions
