The biosecurity officers' fight against fire ants and allegations of threats, harassment and stalking
A Glen Turner Déjà vu

“We’ve had threats of ‘If you come on my property, I’ll shoot you’. ‘If you try and come on my property, I’ll set my dog on you...Australian police are routinely escorting biosecurity officers onto private properties after they reported being threatened with dogs and guns. In cases when people were “incredibly hostile”, program staff would “proactively engage with the police to escort us and to keep the peace and to keep everyone safe in that environment, because we need to complete the treatment”

The environmental officer Glen Turner
was shot in Croppa Creek, near Moree in 2014 investigating illegal land clearing. "There is an interweaving between the physical murder of Glen Turner, and the ecological ‘murder’ of the brigalow through the voracious demand for agricultural land." Book review: ‘The Winter Road’ by Kate Holden

Part 2 today focuses on what I call the 'flatties' from last night. They are flighty little things that do not like to pose (unlike the chunky 'fatties'). Four super visitors.

1) Maiden's Blush (top left)

2) Bloxworth Snout (top right)

3) Seraphim (bl)

4) Least Black Arches (br)

It is heavily patterned. It is largely light grey with two dark nearly triangular patches of brown pointing inwards about halfway down the wing. The bottom wing corners have light arches with dark spots on them. It has a very long thin snout like Gonzo from the muppets, and two pin head eyes on a miniscule head.A wide equilateral triangle moth about 2.5cm wide at the bottom. It is a very dusty dark grey colour over a white background. Imagine sieving coaldust or ash over some paper. It has a thin central abdomen and two pinhead eyes.A 1cm flat arrowhead shaped moth on a paving slab. It has two pinhead eyes. It is very white with three jagged black horizontal lines. The whiteness towards the bottom turns to light dusty grey.

A ban on sand eel fishing so grand
Stays put in the UK's own land
EU tried to fight
But it's still not in sight
For now, the sand eels can peacefully stand

There once was a ban on sand eel fishing,
In the UK, it caused quite the itching,
EU tried to challenge,
But the ban still remained in angle,
For the sand eels, it was a saving.

P.E.I. watershed group hopes fish like this are ready for a close-up, in the name of science
The Central Queens Branch of the P.E.I. Wildlife Federation is launching a new project to use a video camera to count how many adult fish are in the West River. This kind of data is crucial to conservation efforts, but right now the information the non-profit group has been using dates back ...

I was sitting in VR in a 360° video.

The recording was made from a 360° camera in the middle of a pride of lions.

It was surreal to be sitting there, seeing something from a rare, if not impossible point of view.

Then I had the thought, "They will be extinct soon".

How many more experiences will be relegated to video or #VR only?

I wrote a book.

It is called "For the hypothetical aliens" and it is about our place in the universe, how we relate to nature, and what that means for us, individually.

It takes a stance somewhat centred on the dissonance between a SciFi way of looking at things vs. "realism".

It's about 40 pages of actual poetry plus the contents page, acknowledgements etc and (warning) it does contain one five page poem purporting to be about a mathematical equation...

The usual price is £5 but I am discounting them to £4 at the moment. Shipping in the UK is £1.80.

If you live elsewhere in the world we'll have to strategize because there have been problems sending pamphlets/magazines from the UK since Brexit 😢.

If you want to order one, or invite me to read from it at your poetry evening, please PM me.

About the author	53Cover of a poetry pamphlet, the title is "For the hypothetical aliens". It is orange and worn, like an old document folder, and it has some sort of security stamp declaring the contents top have been reclassified "Non sensitive"View of the whole, opened cover of a poetry pamphlet called "For the hypothetical aliens" and with a logo proclaiming it is from "Literal Fraud Press". It carries the image of fake wear and tear, with particularly deep scratches on the back...An inside page from a poetry pamphlet showing the start of a poem:

_The universe speaks to you_

I - Water...

...flows,
but has no thought of flowing. Every droplet
of rain free
to follow its weird
find its level
bead the underside
of a leaf, the whole
nonetheless
adding up to moorland brook, burbling
here and now and in a single direction. Far downstream,
current toys with grit
does not imagine things better
if this pebble were elsewhere
but nags at it
wobbles it
urges it to move
and a mere
thousand years later
a mighty estuary deltas
one side of the continent. The stream meanwhile
is cutting a new channel
through the limestone ridge.

Each molecule is part of something larger
and doesn't know
or things it knows do not make sense. Water's
unfeeling mechanism
floods a city or builds an ecosystem
and even if the outcome of civilisation
is nothing humans comprehend
it will be that rich.
