I highly recommend the Netflix documentary, COVER-UP, about Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Seymour Hersh. He's devoted his career to uncovering news the powerful want buried.
A very timely subject ...

@randahl yesterday at FOSDEM there was a member of the European Parliament who was asked why so many politicians are still on X and her answer made total sense (sadly):
Politicians stay on X because journalists are still there, so they feel that if they leave they will become irrelevant / not be written about.
And journalists stay on X because politicians are there.
It’s a vicious cycle
@tankgrrl While on the topic, Elisabeth just shared a photo she found of PROPER snow at one of our favorite places to spend a week: Bald Head Island, NC. This is what we didn't get last week. Would love to see it at BHI, but exceedingly rare, I suspect.
@jamesb My limit was (and remains, albeit rarely) de-energizing arcade monitors and the occasional retrocomputing tube display. WAY short of what you're describing, but dangerous enough for my tastes.
@tankgrrl Is this sung and pantomimed in a sort of YMCA-like manner? I can picture the hand placement and gestures with each word... demands a little pelvic thrust in one direction or the other, of course.
@tankgrrl The default dashboard scrolls for pages with hundreds of entries right now. I've been taking some time to look at example dashboards on YouTube and elsewhere to get good ideas of how to restrain myself and make these things usable. Like my #gridfinity project, this is going to take a while and some false starts, I suspect.
Todd C. Miller has been maintaining the #sudo codebase for over 30 years. This is exactly one of those cases where an entire critical infrastructure is held together by the work of a single volunteer who apparently can’t find anyone willing to sponsor him for some financial support. #opensource #linux #foss #GNU
@tankgrrl dammit, one of my top of the project list priorities that I keep looking at and not starting is building out a proper dashboard for my Home Assistant. I have it chock full of an ungodly number of devices, but I’m in that odd state of mixed enticement and dread to tumble down that rabbit hole.
Your dedicated display there isn’t helping my guilt that this hasn’t happened yet.
One thing Elisabeth and I enjoyed immensely while living in Cali in ‘23/‘24 was having Dim Sum almost every Sunday morning in Mountain View after we’d visit the amazing farmer’s market.
Back home in Va, I started testing recipes and settled on a core set that have enabled us to continue our Sunday tradition at home. Entirely homemade Lo Mai Gai (with Char Siu), Siu Mai, Har Gow and Chili Oil are the current roster. I make batches and freeze them to last a few weekends in a row. #dimsum #food
@tankgrrl I assumed it was slang like caboose/trunk… so my sense of your anatomical thermal concerns just took a u-turn involving your… uh… wagon.
As far as widely used nomenclature, I seemingly coined my own word for boy bits as a child. No idea how or why, but my parents found it hilarious and adopted it.
No, it’s too embarrassing to share and I shall go to my grave as one of only three people that currently know it.
@shayman bonus points for all the watch glancing giving off vibes that you can’t wait to get this over with? :)
Legitimately the biggest social worry I had when the watch came out and it got useful for notifications: glancing at my watch in mixed company.
@tankgrrl You just summed up the reason I was whining about snow predictions and realities last week. We just don’t get good, deep snow here in Va anymore like when I was kid… nothing, slop, or some snow and then ice. We got a frozen lunar hellscape out of what should have been a great snow a week ago. Everything is ice for a week now (and solar panels perfectly coated to yield zero as a bonus).
What we do now get far more than I recall as a kid is heavy wind just about any time of the year.

“Oh. … Bingo.”
My goodness, every word of this whole video, but most especially the “after show”. Bravo, Alec.
