It can happen that the phone doesn't reboot to fastbootD, but usually when rebooting the phone manually to fastbootD the installer should continue back in?
Are you sure the phone reboots to fastbootD and not the recovery? Is the menu black and orange? If so then you can alternatively try to run our fastboot package and see if it works better.

@iode I've been trying to install this on my Pixel 6 Pro with the installer and manually via adb and it will NOT work for me 😭

The device reboots into FASTBOOTD and the installer is stuck on "Rebooting into fastboot <waiting for any device>". Nothing happens until I select "Reboot to bootloader" on my device and then the installer continues and says it's successful but the device never boots up. It just keeps reloading the bootloader.
