Samsung devices are still stuck in last year’s Google Play System Update

Last year, Google released the Google Play System Update for all devices across all the months, but the issue of getting it up to date started when Samsung’s One UI 8 started rolling out. This has caused users to get stuck in the last update they’ve installed, and those who factory reset the device got stuck in the July 2025 version.

For instance, Galaxy Tab S8 users who updated to One UI 8 and did all the necessary Google Play System Updates, such as our device, got stuck in October 2025, as you can see here:

There were many reports that confirm that users who updated to Android 16 are stuck in either July 2025 or the latest version being applied to their devices, and you can see some of the reports listed here:

One person asked Samsung India via Samsung Members for an inquiry about the Google Play System Update not being updated in Samsung devices, and they said “it is intended behaviour that Google Play system update (GPSU) doesn’t work in the some Samsung Android 15 devices. It is blocked by Samsung’s policy and consultation with Google. The blocked update will be resumed soon at the right time per device.”

There was an article posted online by heise online stating that they have contacted Samsung about the matter, and they responded: “When introducing new devices or major One UI updates, Samsung exclusively deploys software that the company has verified. Samsung has temporarily suspended the distribution of Google updates to avoid potential issues.” This means that it’s a controlled process that makes sure that all Samsung devices perform smoothly, even after Google Play system updates.

It was planned to include the Google Play system update on January 2026, but we have seen some older Samsung devices that got the November 2025 Google Play system update, such as the Galaxy S10, S20, and S21 devices that are not running Android 16. However, those who are running Android 16 are still stuck.

As a result, some people have their Google Play system updates rolled back, and you can see one of the reports here: The Google Play system update rolled back.

We hope that, eventually, Samsung and Google work together to fix this issue, ensuring that Galaxy users be able to update to the latest Google Play System Update. The first GPSU that will land to Android 16 will be explained in a separate article once it gets released.

I just updated my Samsung Galaxy S25+. As it turns out, my phone was nine updates behind, and it was still running Android 15. There may have been notifications, but somehow I overlooked them. For someone who habitually updates his software, I guess that's why we have the "Auto update system" option in Settings > Developer options.

In addition to that, the beta program is finally open to those who are living in the following countries:

This means that everyone living in the above countries can now try out One UI 8.5 in its beta form! If you still don’t have the banner in your Samsung Members app, wait for a few minutes up to a few hours, and you should start seeing the banner.

To join the Beta program, open Samsung Members, go to Beta Program section, and find “One UI 8.5 S25 Beta.”

Afterwards, follow the instructions on the screen. If everything is OK, go to Settings > Software update > Download and install. You’ll get the screen that looks similar to this:

Theme Park 1.1.01.38 includes Emboss icon design and more

Theme Park has just received a new update that introduces a subset of new features for the Galaxy users running One UI 6.0 or later. This app, which allows you to create themes, icon packs, and so on, can now do the following (per Tarun Vats):

  • Added emboss effect and monochrome image option
  • Updated Quick Panel icon preview
  • Added home screen badge color setting (available from One UI Home 8.5)

Originally, it was supposed to appear to those who are testing the One UI 8.5 Beta on their Galaxy S25, but Samsung has just released this updated version of Theme Park to allow users who are using One UI 6.0 or higher to use the emboss effect on their application icons and the monochrome image. Also, you’ll see an updated Quick Panel layout preview to match the modern aesthetics that One UI 7.0 introduced.

Emboss icons

First of all, we’ll showcase the emboss effect. To apply emboss effect for your icons, follow these steps:

  1. Open Theme Park version 1.1.01.38
  2. Go to Icon, and select Create new
  3. Tap Effects, and press Emboss

Now, you can either give the icons a color that you select, or you can leave the colors as they are. If you gave the icons a color, you’ll see that their colors will change, just like this:

Of course, you can revert this by pressing X on the icon color, and the icons will return to their original colors. There are parameters you can edit:

  • Strength: A percentage of the overall emboss effect intensity (default: 50%)
  • Edge: An integer value from 1 to 20 that specifies the edge shadow intensity (20 being the most plasticky appearance) (default: 10)
  • Angle: Angle in degrees from -180° to 180° that the emboss effect follows (default: 45°)
  • Shadow: A percentage of the strength of the icon foreground shadow (default: 50%)

When you’re satisfied with the emboss effect given to your icons, press the download button at the top, and give it a name. After that, press on it, and tap Apply. Your home screen should now show new icons, as in below:

Monochrome icons

Theme Park also introduces a new icon effect that allows you to introduced a monochrome version of the icon, complete with custom color support. In order to use this feature, follow these steps:

  1. Open Theme Park
  2. Go to Icon, and select Create new
  3. Go to Icon, and tap Monochrome
  4. Select your color

When you’re satisfied with the monochrome effect given to your icons, press the download button at the top, and give it a name. After that, press on it, and tap Apply. Your home screen should now show new icons, as in below:

Updated Quick Panel Preview

The previews in the Quick Panel have been updated to match the One UI 7.0+ aesthetics, and you can take a look below:

Updating Theme Park

To update Theme Park, check for updates on your Galaxy Store and on your Good Lock app. If there are no updates, try sideloading the APK posted within the tweet linked at the top of the page. If you’re sideloading the APK, make sure to turn off Auto Blocker before you continue.
