There are only three unique cities in the US: New York, New Orleans, and San Francisco. The rest are just Cleveland.

Culver City in Los Angeles introduced a new bike lane that boosted cycling by 57%. Now it's being removed for cars.

"A project called Move Culver City was launched in November 2021 with the aim of encouraging biking and walking through the 1.3-mile downtown corridor in the Culver City area.

"The project claimed traffic lanes along the Washington and Culver Boulevard strips, creating bike and bus lanes in their stead, reducing the lanes for vehicle traffic to one in either direction. The project was met with mixed opinions over the last few years.

"And while a report released this month by Move Culver City boasted a 57 percent increasing in cycling along the Washington and Culver Boulevard corridor over pre-pandemic levels, the Culver City Council voted 3-2 earlier this week to end the program, remove the bike lanes, and return the corridor to two lanes of vehicular traffic in each direction 'wherever feasible.'"

Is the testing of other platforms just for fun or are you considering moving urbanists.social? Is such a thing even possible?

@admins could you do a follow up poll with the top two winners? I feel like limit and suspend is splitting the vote. I personally vote limit.

@admins
I voted "do nothing" but I'm thinking now I'd rather limit or block.

It can be argued that electric vehicles are an improvement when replacing ICE vehicles.

But that misses a much bigger point — which is that the very best car is *not* an electric car. The very best car is no car at all!

Building electric cars requires massive use of fossil fuels, including petrochemicals for the manufacture of plastics. In addition, mining of lithium for batteries as well as trawling for other minerals in the deep ocean is environmentally disastrous, killing biodiversity while polluting our water, soil, and air.

LITHIUM EXTRACTION — euronews.com/green/2022/02/01/

DEEP-SEA MINING — climatejustice.social/@breadan

The kind of “Green Growth” championed by capitalists and politicians, which features more electric cars, a bit of solar, and a few wind farms — along with continued use of fossil fuels — is not a good answer. It does not solve any of our problems, and in fact only makes them worse.

Say NO to more cars, of any kind. Push instead for active transportation and for improved public transit.

Continued economic growth is unsustainable. Period. The only logical choice for us and for the biosphere is de-growth.

I really don't get why they didn't bring on more mods from their community. They've been around for more than 6 months. There's no users that have earned the admins' trust in that time?

@iridaniotter Hopefully we (Hexbear) also federate with lemmy.ml. The decision isn't made yet.

2023-06-12

@Raphael I don't think Lemmygrad (or Hexbear, which I mostly post on) need to try and hoover up a bunch of new users from this, or worry about getting shut out. The community was getting on fine before. This will contribute some growth, which is nice, but there's no *need* to grow aggressively. Use lemmy.ml to do propaganda/agitation, because you know they'll never defederate. It'll be a useful shared forum while this remains its own independent space.

Why should China be incapable of reaching anything more than one quarter the per capita GDP, with therefore roughly one quarter the living standards, of the U.S.? Is it some xenophobic illusion that the average Chinese person is only one quarter as smart, or only works one quarter as hard, or cannot work out a way to achieve more than a quarter of the living standard of an average American? Or to put it the other way round, that the average American works more than four times as hard, or is four time as smart, or can work out a way to remain living more than four times as well as the average Chinese person?

Well you see actually China uses rote memorization unlike us in the West where creativity™️ and free thinking™️ is taught in schools.

Silly Marxist, that’s why they can’t be richer than us.
