Fuck The Verge for reporting on the upcoming HBO Harry Potter reboot without ever mentioning that the show will immensely profit JK Rowling, who has now chosen to dedicate entire chunks of her fortune to harassing and torturing trans people worldwide through harmful policies and intense anti-trans lobbying.
@Jgmeadows In our local Willowdale nimby facebook group, someone was recently complaining about a fourplex being built on Finch (yes, Finch).
At least the overwhelming response, which i think many are starting to get was... "if you don't accept a multiplex, you will get a 50 towers condo instead".
So you either "compromise" with a multiplex, or you get yourself a condo tower, which is worse for your Nimby heart?
@Jgmeadows I hate when they bring up the price in the narrative to justify refusing the project.
This is cheaper than what a single house on that single lot would cost. The exact price doesn't matter, it is CHEAPER. But yet nobody bats an eye for a 4 million home built at Y&L that would host less people.
It would also be cheaper if the developer didn't have to spend years arguing with the city and the neighborhood on it.
We could have cheaper multiplex but clearly they make it hard.
Issue 4 of Show Up Toronto just went out! There's tons of great tenant organizing events this week, actions against Bills 5 and 6, an opportunity to get involved in bike marshalling, a rally for injured workers, and lots of ways to help clean up the city.
I'm also trying to use the newsletter to highlight activist wins, which we don't talk enough about. Come read about the win that the York South Weston tenant union got at city hall last week, subscribe + tell a friend! https://buttondown.com/showup/archive/show-up-toronto-may-27th-2025/
As famine grips Gaza and hospitals collapse under the strain of mass displacement and infection, Canada continues to authorize arms exports to Israel.
Foreign Minister Anita Anand has condemned the public starvation, but contracts flow behind the scenes.
Since Canada pledged to freeze new permits in January 2024, more than $28.5 million in military exports were still approved under existing licenses.

En 1959, le Roi Charles (un prince de 11 ans à cette époque) apprenait le français Québécois. Son prof était un jeune militaire du 22e Régiment devenu professeur de français pour la famille royale pendant un été.

I am still updating my map of intercity links, based on feedback from visitors to my site.
There were a few services near Trois-Rivières that I missed before and are now added, for example.
If you have any comments, let me know!

Since October 7th, Shelley Caroll has been mostly shying away from engaging on the topic but recently changed her stance in a very visible way.
Among all politicians mentioned to be there, I did not see any liberal mentioned, mostly Conservative MP/MPPs.
She's traditionally been a liberal, was a former MPP candidate with Wynne.
Is she planning a run for Mayor? Trying to put herself on the right of Olivia Chow?
In a week when the Canadian federal government strongly condemned Israel withholding aid and called human suffering in Gaza "intolerable".
City councillor Shelley Caroll of Don Valley North decided that it was the right week to publicly show her support to.. Walk with Israel. She thinks Israel is the country to support and must walk to support)

Maybe you’ve felt the gap — between the problems we face and the systems meant to solve them. Maybe you’ve seen how those closest to the issues are pushed aside.
Help change that. 🧵
Just realized a place I went to earlier this year is on the “avoid all travel” list.
Doesn’t really matter now, but just curious for the future.
Anyone familiar with general travel insurances in Canada?
Does the travel advisories on the Canadian government website matter in determining if a region is eligible for coverage while travelling?
Hey everyone in Toronto, please take this survey about Bathurst priority transit lane plans.
We need these lanes, badly.
8 days later, still no information from #Metrolinx GO Transit on the operating contract being canceled. It was a 1.6 billion dollar contract. They were apparently also in charge of starting the electrification.
No information. Nothing.
@lydiaschoch Saw the sky very dark. Then asked Siri what’s the weather today. “Slight chance of rain”. Checked the satellite view, super intense system going over toronto.
