I've re-written the game engine for Apple II Peasant's Quest. It was a pain, but I traded off disk loads for RAM usage so I should be able to actually finish the game now. Also added page flipping (at huge expense of RAM) for smoother graphics. More info in this video:

So much focus on development speed and being "productive". The fastest, cleanest, and most reliable and error-free code is the code you never write. There's no metric or KPI for unnecessary code not written, productivity gained by not perturbing a dependable system, maintenance avoided by refactoring. You don't get promoted for building systems that don't need constant care and feeding, that don't change week to week, day to day. There's no concept of software being effectively "done" - doing just what it's intended to do and no more. Projects and features get abandoned as teams move from one Shiny to the next. Move fast, keep one step ahead. There's always another green field ready to be turned brown and left behind.

I'd trade my gigabit fiber for dialup if it would come with the dialup-friendly Internet, including the anticipation of "ah, the download manager will finally finish downloading this file in a couple of days!" and dialup-friendly videos, online games and operating system updates (you know, like it used to be).

The street that my mum lives in is a one-way street, but wasn't marked as such on #Google Maps. This caused many drivers to drive the wrong way. I have tried to edit it on Google Maps (there is such functionality), but to no avail. No matter how often I submitted a change (with photos of street signs!), Google said "Sorry, we could not verify it".
Solution: Edit the street on #OpenStreetMap! A few months after I did this, Google seems to have stolen the data, as it regularly does, and now the street is correct in both datasets!
