Great book. Just finished. Whenever I read Castoriadis it is a pleasure.
I suppose next days I will be commenting some quotes.

Controlled experiment finds no detectable citation bump from Twitter promotion https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2023.09.17.558161v1 Good that article choice and tweet timing were randomized. In observational setting, it is likely that people tweet about the most interesting papers, which are also likely to perform better on attention metrics (citations, Altmetrics etc.).
- Altmetrics and tweets are boosted.
- Citations higher after three years, but w/o statistical significance.

We've seen this movie before. As Imani Barbarin says, they’re going to “herd immunity” climate change.
When white supremacy starts losing elections, white supremacists game the system to hold power anyway.
This is why the United States lacks democratic legitimacy.

I've been upgrading my SADI code for lifecourse sequence analysis in #Stata (categorical time-series stuff, in effect).
As a side exercise I adapted the TWED distance measure for continuous variables, not just categorical. Time Warp Edit Distance stretches and compresses the time axis to calculate similarity in time-series, allowing recognition of similarity displaced in time (with penalisation).
Here I cluster country-level COVID19 data, specifically per-million daily death rates.
@mattblaze I find interesting that even if the movie portrayed Strauss as the villain, I felt that what Strauss said about Oppenheimer (that he could do it again, that he wanted the glory of the tortured genius) was correct.
@nicol @mviktoro @grumpasaurus Even more, the CEO character was not completely negative. The movie pointed out criticisms of Mattel, but the portrayal of the business do not only criticizes. The founder character was put in the 'wise old person' role, right?
Brilliant metaphor by @andrewdessler on how #climate risk is non-linear:
"You go from zero damage if the water stops half an inch below the front door of your house to tens of thousands of dollars of damage if the water rises one additional inch and flows into your house.
The correct mental model for #ClimateChange is that things are fine until they’re not, at which point they’re really terrible. And the system can go from “fine” to “terrible” in the blink of an eye."

In the World Congress of Polítical Science and very strange mix of french and english in the spoken presentations in the first block I went. It was striking hearing french when half of the audience could not understand or understand with difficulty. I suppose in writing everything could be easier.
@thesiswhisperer Yep, it was my limit. A lot of people I discuss with still was ñ, and is, in that site, so I continued to endure it. But that was enough.
A Third of North America's Birds Have Vanished. The bird population in North America has decreased by 3 billion birds in the past 50 years, "an absolutely profound change in the natural system". https://nautil.us/a-third-of-north-americas-birds-have-vanished-340007/
Twitter is public by default -so anyone can comment on anyone. And it is searchable (something that a lot of people, specially here, hates, but that is other point). That made it different to other networks.
And it was the place to go for 'breaking news'.
