I split my time between Alaska & Hawaii Island. Current rigs are an Elecraft K1, LNR MTR5b, QRP Labs QMX and a Yaesu FT-891 with a variety of wire antennas. I operate 100% portable and enjoy doing POTA and SOTA. CW is my favorite mode but I also do SSB and digital modes. 73/44!

Finally activated all 24 #POTA parks on the Big Island. (I’m not counting the one that is currently closed to the public.) Finished with a raucous pileup at US-0037, Hawaii Volcanoes Nat’l Park. 58 CW contacts in 1hr 17min. 🤣 Thanks hunters! 73/44 #parksontheair

Even when you tune across the CW portion of the band and hear absolutely nothing, it pays to call CQ. Managed 54 CW contacts in an hour-and-a-half at Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area,
US-12062. Thanks hunters! 73/44. #POTA #parksontheair #potacorgi

The POTA-Cruz at Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area. Beautiful sunshine & palm trees. Near-vertical linked EFHW supported by truck-mounted fiberglass mast…and Remi the Corgi.

Had fun working some big CW pileups at 4 Hawaii Island parks today. Made 105 contacts across 35 states & 6 countries. Thanks hunters, especially Laurent, WØMM; John, AE5X; & Joe, AI5DD @Josefius (qrp). 73/44 #POTA #parksontheair #potacorgi

First test of my “quick deployment” antenna set-up for #POTA in Hawaii. Made 32 CW contacts at US-6404, Kalopa State Recreation Area. A tripod anchored to the pickup bed supports the 30 ft fiberglass pole and a linked EFHW. Thanks hunters! #parksontheair

Great to be back on the air in Hawaii. Did a double activation from Hapuna Beach SRA, US-6403 & Ala Kahakai Nat’l Historic Trail, US-4565. Made 32 CW contacts despite iffy propagation. Best DX was 7,800 mi (12,699 km) with Mar, PY5AMF, in Guaraguaçu, Brazil. #POTA #ParksOnTheAir

Nice CW activation yesterday at US-9701, Palmer Hay Flats Wildlife Refuge. Made 39 contacts with hunters in 11 countries. It's always fun when the over-the-pole path is open to Alaska. Thanks hunters! 73/44 dit dit

@croyle @tsherrygeo @kh6rf It will be interesting to hear what the first users have to say after trying it in the field. No need for a new rig here. I have a MTR5B and am assembling a CFT-1.

@tsherrygeo @kh6rf All good points. Field testers are key.

First details re the new MTR3B are up at LNR. Notable: 5w @ 13v (notice it says 13v, not 12v) , built in touch keyer, BNC, great looking display. lnrprecision.com/store/MTR3B-V

Combined dog sitting and #POTA activation today at Chugach Nat’l Forest, US-4447 & KMTA Nat’l Heritage Area, US-7884. Worked about 40 cw contacts on 17 meters. Great DX over the pole to Europe. 73/44! #parksontheair #potacorgi #potadoggies #needtowashthetruck

Dogs chillin’ while the strange human emits beeps & boops from inside the truck. EFHW suspended on 30+ ft pole.

@AF0AJ @kh6rf I turned an old Chameleon EFHW into a linked 20-10m EFHW, which I support on a 32ft telescoping fiberglass pole. It’s almost vertical and fed at the bottom with about 15ft of coax, which acts as a counterpoise. Less than 1.3:1 SWR on all bands.

Pole mounted in the truck holding the EFHW.I made the link insulators by cutting down some cheap plastic carabiners.

At a park Thursday a man in his 30s broke away from a group of tourists to ask what I was doing. We had a long chat. Not just about #POTA, but about all aspects of #hamradio. By the time he left, he said he might like to become a ham himself! I gave him the #ARRL & POTA websites.

Set up on a picnic table at US-7217, Matanuska Glacier State Recreation Recreation Site. Sunlit glacier in the background.

@kr1st @kh6rf Yes, I’m a very lucky guy!

What a blast! An over-the-pole path opened up Tuesday and I was able to make 50 CW contacts with hams in 15 different countries! The scenery was great, too. US-4447, Chugach Nat’l Forest and US-7884, Lowell Pt State Rec Site. Thanks hunters! 44/73 #POTA #parksontheair #potacorgi

Trying to solve the problem of logging on QRZ from two “countries” HI & AK. It appears the only way to get the location data (CQ zone etc) to match up is to create a separate QRZ entry for KH6RF/KL7, then keep a separate log for /KL7. Seems very confusing. Any suggestions, ideas?

QRZ page. Can’t get rid of Hawaii on the flag, either.
