Ever heard of Gutenberg workshops? Perhaps not but it's a beautiful location and should unisexual reproduction be of interest, do look at what we will organize 11-13 July in Ingelheim, which is a pretty old town near Mainz, which in turn is close to Frankfurt (thus easy to get to).

Since the info about registration costs is a bit hidden, I put it right here: 200€ for PhD students, 250 for postdoc onwards. Don't hesitate, the deadline for registering is May 18!

Signage in my home country has definitely changed since I was a child...

Signage that says "Skiers only, no matter what Google Maps says"

A new #PhilTransB theme issue marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of the article that described evolutionary game theory, now an indispensable part of modern evolutionary theory. Edited by Xiang-Yi Li Richter and Jussi Lehtonen. Read: bit.ly/PTB1876

Visited a city where I spent some time in childhood, cousin (who visited during that time back then) was with me. Observation: a tram from back then can now be ridden as a museum experience. Now we're debating if this implies we too belong in a museum.

I've heard that "find yourself in #Pisa? Take a photo of the thing that's meant to be vertical but isn't" is part of the human behaviour repertoire. I didn't want to break the norm.

Bollards in Pisa that amused me because so many of them tilt at about the same angle as the famous leaning tower.

yes, can be done (I actually often assign sex<0 to denote males and >0 females, simpler to handle than 0 and 1 sometimes and easier to memorize than 1 and 2), but that fails if using as parts of variable names - syntax in code makes it a subtraction. It was just weird not to have noticed this about conventions in written text, ever.

Coding something, some of my subscripts are letters and some are numbers, suddenly I need two versions of each, using lowercase and uppercase to denote a small difference...

...and I cannot do this. Why don't numbers come in lowercase and uppercase?

I never thought of this before.

It’s very funny to me that the dominant Twentieth Century conception of AI was a slightly awkward nerd with an inhuman mastery of facts and logic, when what we actually got is smooth-talking bullshit artists who can’t do eighth-grade math.

@MarcoFB I agree! We had a strict word limit for the primer so I am hoping that our general pointer to the caveats discussed in the paper will encourage readers to do so. Gerlach et al 2012 Behav Evol is a good paper discussing the litter size (or clutch size) point explicitly.

#Reproductive success usually increases when a male mates with more females; a new #PLOSBiology study by @TimJanicke &co shows the same is true for females. Here, @kokkonutter & @Mikejennions explore why this is... Paper: plos.io/3X2ALyt Primer: plos.io/3QNSaJ3

So, I just tried this: you put in your Mastodon handle and it finds all the accounts that your followers follow and gives you an easy link to follow them as well. I found a bunch of people I know but didn't realize they were on Mastodon. Check it out:

Some six or so years since "Jeremy" aka "shellebrity snail" 🐌, I might finally have a line of left-coiling or sinistral garden snails!! Hoping these 3 virgins just emerging from hibernation, 🤞🤞will produce lefty babies. Then can finally get doing the #genomics #asymmetry #chirality #snails #cornu #leftysnail #snaillove

@danhoops Hmm, perhaps with the nuance (at least in this case) that we quantify the risk of remaining unmated for life (and don't assume anything exciting like haplodiploidy or facultative sex that would allow reproduction to occur regardless)
