Update: got my basic reactor built, but still need to get more uranium for the turbine & heat exchanger! I also started setting up a city-wide power grid (but only made enough Ultimate cables for three buildings so far. 😬) #Minecraft

It's Thursday, so that means group play on the Civic Tech Minecraft Server! Send me a message if you'd like to join! I'll be on around 6:30PM ET.

Tonight I'm hoping to mine enough uranium to get started on our town's reactor build!

@shaun_haney @mistersql Yeah the magic here is - move to a neighborhood where folks care about keeping the place clean.

Sorry for bringing this over from birdsite, but my partner just flagged this for me. Florida's new Congressman had his application for a DC apartment denied. This is the system at work. #racism #poverty

Tweet from Maxwell Alejandro Frost:
"Just applied to an apartment in DC where I told the guy that my credit was really bad. He said I’d be fine. Got denied, lost the apartment, and the application fee.

This ain’t meant for people who don’t already have money."

Hey everyone, I'm going to move this account officially over to @krusynth@mastodon.publicinterest.town in the next day or so. Just a heads-up that it might not go smoothly, so if you don't hear from me in a day or two you can find me over there!

A reminder that the National Defense Authorization Act #NDAA is an annual US law which spits in the face of the democratic process, and primarily exists to shovel unpopular legislation through the process under the nose of the public and most legislators.

Congress should ban rider bills altogether, but this multi-thousand-page dumpster fire is a disgrace.

@mzagaja (I still have a dream of a browser that just consumes markdown with none of this nonsense html in the way.)

2022-12-08

@mzagaja No I havent! I've mainly been focused on the other end of the pipe; markdown is good enough for me these days. Let me know how it goes!

Washington DC voted to make its bus system fare-free, starting July 1. This is big...the first major US city to make their bus service completely free, and hopefully will serve as an example to other bus services around the nation. This makes the busses available not only to the middle class but also to the very poor who can't afford transit...in other words, greater equity. (EDIT: I found out Kansas City has been free for 2 years. My apologies to them.) #transit #bus #PublicTransit

: go to https://{your mastodon server}/users/{any username}.rss to get an RSS feed for your RSS reader.

Level 2: go about your day without internet, then in the evening settle down at your Computer Desk with a nice cup of tea to RSS-digest the day's shitposts.

Level 3: Aggregates your RSS feeds into epub format. Load the output onto your 2000's e-ink e-reader via USB cable. Sit in an overstuffed armchair with a nearby lamp, say aloud "Ah, yes, today's internet" and sip your port.

Excellent post from Robin Sloan: “I am thinking specifically of experimentation around “ways of relating online”. I’ve used that phrase before, and I acknowledge it might be a bit obscure … but, for me, it captures the rich overlap of publishing and networking, media and conviviality. It’s this domain that was so decisively captured in the 2010s, and it’s this domain that is newly up for grabs.”

@anatecture At least a couple years ago when I was still at OMB and we were still overseeing .gov, there was a dedicated push to have fewer new .gov domain names approved, so this is definitely timely. I *hope* over the longer term we'll see those contract further too!
