The Outskirts of Myre -

As we approached, the fog thickened and the air grew darker. The sad pine trees were replaced by clumps of bamboo-like plants, mixed with kelp-like shoots with strange green-glowing orbs. I was told the sun never rises on Myre.

Nature presents us with 80 "octaves" of light, of which humans can see exactly 1.

Bringing the other 79 octaves into view has taken two centuries of effort, but it has transformed our ability to sense our place in the cosmic order.

My new essay in Aeon magazine:

aeon.co/essays/william-hersche

This is a mosaic of the images covering the entire sky as observed by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), part of its All-Sky Data Release.

The sky can be thought of as a sphere that surrounds us in three dimensions. To make a map of the sky, astronomers project it into two dimensions. Many different methods can be used to project a spherical surface into a 2-D map. The projection used in this image of the sky, called Aitoff, takes the 3-D sky sphere and slices open one hemisphere, and then flattens the whole thing out into an oval shape.

In the mosaic, the Milky Way Galaxy runs horizontally across this map. The Milky Way is shaped like a disk and our solar system is located in that disk about two-thirds of the way out from the center. So we see the Milky Way as a band running through the sky. As we look toward the center of the galaxy, we are looking through more of the disk than when we are looking at large angles away from the center, and you can see a noticeable increase in stars (colored blue-green) toward the center of the image.

Kaanepildi kirjeldus: joonistus fantastilisest hõbevioletsest maastikust, kus horisonti piirab veidratest moodustistest mets. Mets võib olla vaenulik, sest esiplaanil on üks puutüvi avanud irevil hammastega suu.

I eventually reached what seemed to be the "end", or perhaps the "beginning" of the tunnels and the mine. A platform on a winch and rope hung halfway up the shaft, above yet more rickety platforms and shacks.

Kirjutasin ERRi artikli.

Triumph of the Undead: The Public Domain as Horror Hero

Art is the closest thing we have to immortality. And when an artwork enters the public domain, it becomes—fortunately—undead: liberated from the mortal constrictions of copyright, now free to haunt new viewers and readers.

By Olivia Pavao

publicbooks.org/triumph-of-the

Max Schreck in a promotional still for the film

Created by F. W. Murnau (died 11 March 1931), Henrik Galeen (died 30 July 1949) and Fritz Arno Wagner (died 18 August 1958).

Nosferatu promotional image.

Max Schreck appears in full costume as the grotesque, vampiric Count Orlok. His appearance is haunting: a bald, bat-like figure with elongated fingers, pointed ears, a gaunt face, and wide, predatory eyes that evoke a sense of unease and dread.

He stands frozen in a dramatic, hunched pose, his clawed hands extended as if reaching toward an unseen victim. His expression is blank yet menacing, emphasizing his unnatural, undead presence.

The image is starkly lit, with high contrast between deep shadows and pale highlights, emphasizing Orlok’s cadaverous complexion and angular features. The atmosphere is tense and gothic, rooted in German Expressionist style, which used distortion and shadow to evoke psychological horror.
