I am an independent photojournalist focused for many years on the #environment, #humanrights, #socialjustice, #detention, #housing, #gentrification and #precariousworkers.

I also love to talk about languages and translation, the arts and all that the countryside has to offer.

It's that time of year again when my stream is full of images of dangerous metal particles, toxins and chemicals being pumped into the air above London.

Arsenic, strontium, barium, rubidium, cadmium, manganese, sodium oxalate, aluminium, copper, iron dust powder, potassium perchlorate, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and particulates, quite apart from all that smoke in the heart of the ULEZ.

Millions spent on trashing the environment and yet barely anyone contests it.

Rarely have I sensed a bigger disconnect than after coming home this morning from speaking to seriously struggling shopkeepers and passersby in Slough and then listening to millionaire government ministers speaking about the cost of living crisis on the radio.

@maco That's certainly how the app works but, personally, I find that knowing I can only make a few mistakes helps me focus better and so learn more. I almost invariably run out of time before I've exhausted my supply of mistakes.

@froozy I hope it works for you! The paid version would give you more opportunities to practise but I find I concentrate better just doing lessons and having to get them right! 🙂

2022-12-08

@froozy I find that the free version focuses me much better on making progress through lessons rather than spending time on repetitive practice sessions or engaging with the competitive element. There are ads on the free version, of course, but, after several weeks, I couldn't tell you the name of a single advertiser on there as I just grab a cup of tea for a few seconds after every lesson. Paying does help support the app (a plus) but I find the free version a better model for my purposes.

I’ve been learning a language - Brazilian Portuguese - since summer using Duolingo and I’m quite surprised at its effectiveness in teaching the rudiments of a language with minimal effort and little or no expense on the part of the user as compared to other methods of language learning I’ve used in the past. What I find odd, though, is that I’ve made so much quicker progress since I moved from the paid version to the free version 🤫

There’s something very therapeutic about carefully folding and putting away your summer clothes for winter and then bringing out and rediscovering your winter clothes. A ritual I picked up during my time living in Italy. #winter

Honoured to be invited to photograph today activists from #ACTUPLondon recreating a historic mass die-in on Trafalgar Square for #worldaidsday2022.

ACT UP London are calling for collective national action against government policies forcing the closure of #HIVAIDS education, prevention & support services & the event recalled a 1989 die-in by AIDS activists when Margaret Thatcher’s government was threatening to close an AIDS ward at Middlesex Hospital.

@Davesdad I made a slight tweak to select more options after I saw an RT about a day after our last exchange and I've not seen any since. Fingers crossed, the only way I get to see an RT now is if I go directly to the profile of anyone who has RTd from the bird site (which I think makes sense, wouldn't happen often and doesn't bother me). Thanks for your help!

Well, the #BlackFriday and various #WorldCup rules, filters and mutes are working remarkably well across e-mail and social media other than Meta, which I use only fleetingly. If only I could do the same thing with TV and radio news broadcasts.

I've added a set of images from the following to my website:

London, UK. 12th November, 2022. Climate justice campaigners march to demand urgent climate finance and reparations for loss and damage for global south communities as part of a Global Day of Action called by African climate campaign groups at COP27.

Marvina Newton of United for Black Lives and Justice for Chris Kaba addresses climate justice campaigners in London. She is standing in front of a large circular banner bearing the words 'Climate Justice is Racial Justice' and 'Justice for Chris Kaba', wearing a 'Justice for Chris Kaba' t-shirt under a predominantly yellow over-garment and has her left arm raised with a clenched fist.

Saddened to hear of the passing on of Wilko Johnson. For me it wasn’t just about his music, it was also that so many bands I loved would probably have sounded completely different were it not for Wilko having changed the game first. Very different overall sounds but the Gang of Four and Au Pairs spring immediately to mind.

I wasn't really sure what my first post should be here on Mastodon but as a way of introduction I thought I would post my latest photographic series - postcard size cyanotype prints of Jackdaws.
I have been a photographer for about 20 years & am inspired by my family & home life - my work is very personal & I enjoy working with many different photographic processes and mediums.
I shall look forward to being a part of the community & seeing & sharing work.

Off to a good home to help teach darkroom photography to a keen new owner, my last 35mm camera. A Canon EOS 30, introduced in 2000.

I ran a roll of Fuji Neopan Pro 400 through it and it's still going strong after backpacking around India, Egypt, Peru, Bolivia, Mongolia, Cuba, China, Cambodia, Albania and Russia among others and, probably more to the point, despite not having been used for almost 15 years.

@merepseud I saw them at the same venue a couple of years before. Leicester Poly’s Ents Committee was really well organised around that time and so often had someone worth seeing lined up.

@Davesdad I've not seen any RTs since I set up the filter but I'll let you know for sure in a few days.
