"Every day, almost 3,700 people are killed globally in crashes involving cars, buses, motorcycles, bicycles, trucks, or pedestrians. More than half of those killed are pedestrians, motorcyclists, or cyclists."

@mekkaokereke
If wages aren't allowed to rise faster than inflation in a growing economy, that mathematically guarantees increasing inequality. The wealth goes somewhere.

β€œIf huge cars disappeared, the biggest losers wouldn’t be drivers but carmakers. Some of them have probably been kept alive by the outsized profits from SUVs. If we let SUVs keep fouling the planet we might as well admit there’s no sacrifice we’re willing to make for the climate.”

"A single e-Hummer battery is roughly 350 times the size of the one in Rad Power’s popular RadRover 6 β€” which also costs $2,100 instead of $87,000 and up, and can use ordinary wall power instead of an expensive high-voltage charger. Put simply, mass e-bike adoption would give us hundreds of times more decarbonization for our policy dollar."

"Washington, D.C., will end most right-on-red turns by 2025. Already, the state of Hawaii has prohibited them on a tourist-dense stretch of road in Honolulu. The city of Berkeley in California is considering banning right on red at all intersections. Near the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the city last fall banned right turns at 50 signalized intersections in its downtown core."

I'm writing the bonus materials for EMMA'S DRAGON and working on Mary Bennet's chapter (my fabulous LGBT heroine whom I adore). That led me to the historical fact that always blows my mind: Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein the exact same year that Jane Austen wrote Emma. #amwriting #janeausten #maryshelley

The thing I like about Matt Haney, is he's the most boring, least dramatic politician in SF politics. While everyone's saying "Some people poop outside on purpose! They're just bad people! Porta potties won't help!" He just... puts the porta potties in place, and streets get cleaner and less crappy.

While folk argue that "Shortening permit approval times won't increase housing!" And "Office conversions are hard! It's not that simple! HVAC! Plumbing!" He just... starts getting the law passed.

@mekkaokereke the sheer depth of the resistance the city of San Francisco has to the concept of attended public restrooms is unfathomable to me.

Of course unhoused people need more help than that, but sanitation and PO Boxes would provide dignity, reduced health issues, less public resentment, and a permanent contact info.
