AI is not the real problem: students plagiarize when they think that education is a transactional process whose sole purpose is to unlock a better paying career. they want to get the degree in the most efficient manner possible. who do you think taught them that?

#AI #ChatGPT #Essays #HigherEd: "Mr. Aumann confronted his student over whether he had written the essay himself. The student confessed to using ChatGPT, a chatbot that delivers information, explains concepts and generates ideas in simple sentences โ and, in this case, had written the paper.
Alarmed by his discovery, Mr. Aumann decided to transform essay writing for his courses this semester. He plans to require students to write first drafts in the classroom, using browsers that monitor and restrict computer activity. In later drafts, students have to explain each revision. Mr. Aumann, who may forgo essays in subsequent semesters, also plans to weave ChatGPT into lessons by asking students to evaluate the chatbotโs responses.

#ActuallyAutistic folk, what's one thing you do that helps you prevent or manage autistic burnout?
For me, I try to engage in gentle pleasurable activities around my special interests when I can. If I just spend all my time in bed resting, I end up in burnout AND depressed.
Please boost so we have a thread full of resources for each other!
I know so many are on both sides of this debate but I truly think this is the beginning of a new skill set for students. #ChatGPT

"Education as a whole is not a problem waiting to be fixed but a set of issues, problems, and opportunities to be addressed." (Weller, 2022).
I'm an advocate for #DesignThinking. Not as a way of solving problems but as a way of exploring the world. This idea comes from Jon Kolko, a designer.
This thinking helps push past the idea that #education is broken and opens up to us (educators) the opportunity to explore issues, opportunities and problems and develop new approaches (small) based on evidence and feedback.
This is me just unpacking my thinking. ๐ @edutooters

The spiral of #inquiry is basically a design process: research, design, build.
Maybe one thing missing is observation of self. i.e reflect in practise.
That's the magic, good professional practise framed by a research/inquiry approach. @edutooters

In 1959, police were called to a segregated library when a Black 9-year-old boy trying to check out books refused to leave, after being told the library was not for Black people.
The boy, Ronald McNair, went on to became an astronaut. The library is also now named after him

Gave my undergrad #math seminar course an assignment to find a topic in modern mathematics (>1800) that they find interesting and present in our group discussion.
Topics included relativity, geometric algebra/calculus, the Continuum Hypothesis, and fuzzy logic (special thanks to #quantamagazine for the wealth of articles). Pretty cool to see the students get excited about different ideas in math.
