When I complain that some software (or its dependencies) doesn't work on *BSD but requires Linux, I'm not criticizing Linux. For me, it's not an OS battle, but a matter of freedom and avoiding a dangerous and rampant computing monoculture. And when people reply to me with "well, just use it on Linux" - while they're giving me sensible advice - they're missing the crucial point: if it ONLY runs on Linux, it's not Linux's fault, but we are, precisely, creating a dangerous monoculture.

@neil huh, I'd missed the killing of web filing.

I was already closing / offshoring everything anyway but the webfiling bit has annoyed me all over again.

With the news that PornHub will be enforcing age verification it'd be useful if we could get more websites listed on https://NoAV.online so we can track when the axe falls.

That NoAV will end up highlighting all the websites that don't require Age Verification is just a happy side effect.

@neil @Edent I've recently racked (well shelved in a rack) a bunch a fully specced M3 Mac Studios - I'd rather have used the HP or Nvidia equivalents but stock availability was an issue.

@neil or in other words; why the OSA is ultimately doomed :)

gurk-rs on OpenBSD does have an extra (sub)dependency: gmake. Without it, building the openssl-sys extension fails.

So, you should be able to install gurk-rs with:

$ doas pkg_add rust protobuf-c gmake
$ cargo install --git https://github.com/boxdot/gurk-rs gurk

There is currently an issue with an upstream package that requires gurk-rs to be ran using the full path, so that'd by default be:

$ /home/$USER/.cargo/bin/gurk

@WiteWulf I was thinking some weird webmaster ring that you stumbled upon and can't quite work out the common thread that brought them together.

@WiteWulf I omitted "other" :D

Life got in the way and I hadn't noticed that the automated build/deploy systems for the Brass Horn Tor Exits had broken. :(

They are slowly coming back online.

@justine @kashcah I can't say I've seen much in physical print but I went from 'knowing' domestic electrical through to deploying a 2kw array with batteries, DC and AC distribution mostly from reading the Victron literature; https://www.victronenergy.com/support-and-downloads/technical-information

I have just seen that that have a free hardcopy book now: https://www.victronenergy.com/orderbook

Holy crap, I did it! 🎉

I made my own very smol blog, all hand coded, just html and css, like that time in 1996 when I made a web page (I have no idea how to use JavaScript).

The most amazing thing about this is that the RSS feed seems to WORK!?! If someone showed up tomorrow with a bottle of fancy kombucha and a Girl Scouts achievement patch, I would not be surprised.

Anyway, I'm almost embarrassed to share it, but here it is:

@skylar @ipg so they didn't learn from attaching everyone's phone number in HTTP headers then? Good ol' O2....

@bloor @ahnlak supervise? Goodness man, this is a TV we're talking about, not some benign domestic object like knives, power tools, caustic cleaning materials, Internet, stairs, sharp corners, glasses or ceramic tableware.

Nope. Sorry, best we can do is something inconvenient with an added dose of surveillance adtech just for good measure.

2025-05-15

@bloor @ahnlak but what if a child visited?

Or pointed a remote through the window?

Or broke in and mid burglary decided to watch some TV?

THINK OF THE CHILDREN YOU MONSTERS!

@justine @stilla I last compiled in January (and I haven't moved to 7.7 yet)

I'd love to see the risk assessment for signposting the worst of the worst to anyone who visits ofcom.org.uk :D

@pandorablake @neil a brand new domain (even one weeks old) might be penalised for a while as obviously spammers buy a domain for $1.99 and immediately start spamming from it because it is 'clean'.

The wider the separation between (sub)domain(s) and IPs then the better for reducing the impact of spam lists against a server/domain.
