"How he’s developed and wielded this influence over two decades is one of the more consequential and underappreciated shapers of the failed global response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Entering year two, this response has been defined by a zero-sum vaccination battle that has left much of the world on the losing side."

Unfortunately, mastodon.social abuse their position of control over joinmastodon.org as deftly as the worst of the tech monopolists.

Resistance is futile.

@RoundSparrow @cemedia

Glad to hear that you agree that people who speak up for the 45,000+ murdered Gazans are being censored. Thanks for confirming that.

2024-10-21

@RoundSparrow @cemedia

Is your position that no-one is being censored over Gaza?

Have you done any research at all?

He's really dragged the whole "human rights lawyer" brand through the mud. They should sue for damages.

@Fizzfizzpopop @cemedia

Just for my curiosity - where are you based? And if it's UK, what's your ISP?

It's probably domain blocking, and hence part of exactly the described issue of your access to information being controlled by the state.

I'd suggest one of:
- Install Firefox and use their "maximum protection" DNS mode; or
- Manually set your computer to use a DoH DNS server like https://1.1.1.1
- Use a decent VPN app (I use NordVPN, but that's not an endorsement)

"The Biden administration admitted today that the CIA and military special operations forces have been assisting Israel to locate and track Hamas leaders, an involvement in the Gaza war that goes far beyond what the government previously disclosed. The revelation follows Wednesday’s killing of October 7 architect Yayha Sinwar, but also comes after months of assurances by the White House that American intelligence and special operators were merely involved in hostage recovery.

Despite the fact that Sinwar was killed by accident (and not as part of a targeted operation), the Biden administration’s desperation to grab some of the limelight is more a political desire to demonstrate success in their decision to support Israel. It also shows an acceptance of one of Israel’s core beliefs about its wars against its many enemies, one that the United States has adopted: that killing leaders is going to eliminate threats, indeed that it is tantamount to victory." kenklippenstein.com/p/with-sin

@marilyn

Thanks for sharing, I hadn't seen this solid Arendt-based point before.

Having read the article you link to, I think this "quote" captures the essence of what Arendt actually said very well, in a form that's easier to digest. In meaning, it seems faithful, and doesn't leave out any important nuance.

I disagree with Berkowitz that any alteration to her words is necessarily harmful. To me, it's the message that matters. Direct quotes, out of context, can just as easily mislead.

Ranta’s powerful zine sheds light on the gendered experiences of migrant women who have endured sexual, mental, and physical abuse while working as content moderators at Sama in Nairobi. Download the zine at data-workers.org/ranta/.

🗣️ This Monday I’ll be moderating a conversation with these amazing women doing data work and researching its impacts: Kauna Malgwi, Botlhokwa Ranta, Fasica Gebrekidan & Milagros Miceli ( @milamiceli).

⏰ 9am PT/6pm CET.
➡️ Zoom: events.zoom.us/ev/Ani8O9hWqLxv
➡️Twitch: twitch.tv/dair_institute

Let me tell you a little bit about who is joining me in this conversation. 🧵

@jesusmargar I think I entirely disagree.

Good ideas don't only come from good people. (It's often the other way around - we tell only good stories about the people whose ideas we like - they probably aren't all good people)

I have a feeling that most ideological leaders probably have some pretty intense & obtuse personality traits. It's not easy to break from the mould.

To my mind, we should judge ideas almost entirely separately from their inventors.

@freezr

Which tribunal are you referring to?

I don't see anything worthy of ridicule in the quoted passage.

Sexual violence is deeply personal trauma. Most trauma victims are not up to testifying in public, & are unlikely to want to invite further abuse by making public statements. The ones that do are rare heroes.

Holding abusers to account requires both named & anonymised/pseudonymous sources, and also considering the volume of anonymous complaints.

@ailurocrat True. I think the reason they've made this very thorough report is to convince the #FSF and others to properly disavow him.

Seeing all of the Richard Stallman stuff in one place is A LOT: stallman-report.org/

"Richard Stallman has a profound influence on the free software community and our movement. He is responsible for defining the four freedoms that steer us, he has written all of our principal philosophy ... and he is venerated as our ideological leader.

Richard Stallman has also embarked upon a decades-long political project to normalize sexual violence. Under his ideological leadership, the free software movement is unsafe, particularly for women."
