@jimsalter @ajn142 appreciate the response, all fair! ;)
@oemb1905 @ajn142 Funny you should mention that.
My instance aims to be a bit of a political safe space. Which doesn't mean we don't *have* any politics of our own, or that we'll roll over for aggressors... it just means that we try to take the edge off a bit.
CWs are required for political or "controversial" stuff--you can still say it, but nobody has to see it unless they CHOSE to see it.
And no antagonistic behavior--in other words, don't break Wheaton's Law.
It's difficult but worth it.
A friend of mine, @ajn142, came up with a really interesting term: "parasocial media."
Social media is about socializing, but on many if not most "social" media platforms, we're seeing less and less actual socializing, with most engagement being reposting things others posted, without additional comment.
That ain't social, it's parasocial.
Avoid parasocial media. Go where people actually talk to you.
@jimsalter @ajn142 the problem though is that most people don't want critical feedback or thought partnering and interpret either form of comment as an attack ... so it becomes tiresome or even worse, you begin to refrain from socializing out of fear that someone will take offense or misconstrue one's intent, etc. echo chamber comments, or praise and chest pumping, those are always welcome ... but folks have trouble with dialogue these days, and that's a big part of civilized social discourse
Today's bot scrape results. ChatGPT is scraping my Wiki more each day, up from 70-90K to about 150K all last week. It's curious that Grok/X has not found it yet; need to manually check the script and string against the access log to verify that's legit. No performance drawbacks from this and if they exceed more than 10K in one minute, they get a 10 minute timeout. More on that approach here: https://tech.haacksnetworking.org/2025/04/06/managing-ai-bots-w-apache-mpm-fpm-fail2ban/ #gnulinux #opensource #freesoftware #linux
In between teaching math/cs & running this security/networking side company, I need R&R. To do that, I collect music. Back in 2009, I found Kogar's https://kogarsjunglejuice.blogspot.com/2009/10/wrapped-up-and-tangled-up-in-cramps.html Lux & Ivy's Favorites Vol 1-11 - Nearly 16 years later, w/ 2 more kids and 35 more pounds, I caught up on Vol 12-19 & made a page where I track Kogar's work, +provide ID3/codec fixes to a set of masters I maintain - more info @ -> https://notorious.haacksnetworking.org/2025/06/01/lux-ivys-favorites/ #gnulinux #sysadmin #freesoftware #opensource Let's GO rock and roll !!
It's never been more important to host your own email server. https://tech.haacksnetworking.org/2025/03/27/perfecting-the-self-hosted-email-server/ Set up a little VPS somewhere that does not block smtp and follow the Wiki tutorial's listed at the top of this post. To safeguard your privacy & security #selfhost w/ #debian #gnulinux !!
In addition to teaching and the network/security work I do, I also very much enjoy poetry and music. I had some time off so I updated my compilation of Lux & Ivy's Favorites. Thanks to Kogar the Singing Ape for compiling all this! https://notorious.haacksnetworking.org/2025/06/01/lux-ivys-favorites/ My post has links to his work and listening links if anyone is interested in exploring the artists that inspired the Cramps' sound. #music #punk #rockabilly #psychobilly
Enjoying life, no complaints. Hope everyone has fun today unless they made other plans!
@bcantrill @ahl found a way to work in Carmen San Diego again ... do we have any stats on how many times this tech allegory has been used 😆
@coffeegeek Geez, not what I expected. You still use streaming services with today's storage to price to self-hosting complexity ratios? I can't imagine you would be anything but totally relieved and freed from musical oppression by switching to airsonic adv, and using either a regular old web browser and/or a subsonic API-compatible client ... forgive me, I won't talk about how to make the perfect crema on an espresso pull or proper dollop for an A-tier macchiato ... limits for sure ... ;O
Tech CEOs are using AI to replace themselves https://www.theverge.com/news/673194/tech-ceos-zoom-klarna-replace-earnings
@bcantrill Will this be published soon on the podcast feed?
@bcantrill @ahl oh mai mai, this is gonna be spicy! 😂
It was a wild week for crooked AI! On the next Oxide and Friends, @ahl and I will be joined by Ben Shindel, who wrote a terrific piece on the fraud at MIT:

On last night's Oxide and Friends, @bcantrill and I discussed the end of USENIX ATC, reminiscing about our experiences there and its impact to the industry. @aka_pugs joined to dial the reminiscence back another couple of decades! https://youtu.be/kd6dIonsxUw
Enjoyed this article https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/the-european-cloud-ladder/ but in between 1 and 2 is "co-location" and I think #2 is usually called Dedicated Hosting and the distinction between 2 and 3, and/or the distinction and disambiguation between dedicated hosting and virtual private servers is not clear. I also think 1.5 is optimal, i.e., co-location ... but it certainly requires funds and infra for quick turn around but it is hardly broken. Nice article, ty for the take @bert_hubert #floss #gnulinux #opensource
