PostgreSQL maintainer Simon Riggs has died in a small airplane crash, on Tuesday.
For those who didn't know Simon, he's responsible for PostgreSQL Binary Replication and many big data features. He and I worked together at Greenplum 2006-2008. Postgres would not be the world-leading DB it is today if it weren't for him.
Just wanna say, team: fuck Bluesky and Twitter. The support I get for my work here on Masto is so much better. There’s a culture of boosting stuff we love and I appreciate it so much, as a creative person who relies on shares to bring in new readers and ultimately pay my bills, and invoices from other creative people. Thank you ❤️
The recent developments in TX and FL should be a wake up call to all academics to start organizing en masse. As individual scholars we have very limited power to counteract the current and future attacks on our educational institutions. Collectively, though, we have immense power. Labor unions provide that mechanism and it’s long overdue for academics in the US to join the current labor movement. Relying on electoral politics every few years is insufficient.
Dear journalists:
By remaining on Elon Musk's platform you are -- knowingly or not -- directly supporting your enemy. He is systematically turning his platform into a showcase for people and entities that see democracy as an impediment to achieving what can accurately be understood as fascist goals.
Wrecking democracy means destroying freedom of expression -- the basis of what you do.
For your own sake, and for your honor, please leave.

Huffman's not mad Reddit was scraped for a chatbot. He's mad he wasn't paid for the privilege. It's his data, you see. His. Not yours.
Part of my recent vacation was spent in Pittsburgh, PA. Here is #Randyland, a building-size art exhibit by a local artist.

Some Google engineer launched a feature that got them a promotion and now my mom can't use her phone anymore. Silicon Valley is incapable of imagining a user who isn't a 27 year old white man.
