The last, the very last,
So richly, brightly, dazzlingly yellow.
Perhaps if the sun's tears would sing
against a white stone...

Such, such a yellow
Is carried lightly ‘way up high.
It went away I'm sure because it wished
to kiss the world goodbye.

For seven weeks I've lived in here,
Penned up inside this ghetto
But I have found my people here.
The dandelions call to me
And the white chestnut candles in the court.
Only I never saw another butterfly.

That butterfly was the last one.
Butterflies don't live in here,
In the ghetto.

The United Arab Emirates is taking major steps to combat a regional culture of Holocaust denial.

In #2022, over 1 million 184 thousand people visited the Auschwitz Memorial. It was a considerable increase compared to the previous two years, but before the pandemic, the Museum welcomed more than 2 million visitors a year.

'It is particularly important that over 90 per cent of visitors learned about the history of Auschwitz during their visit with Museum educators,' said Museum Director Dr. Piotr M. A. Cywiński.

123 years ago #otd Chiune Sugihara was born. A Japanese #diplomat who served as vice-consul for the Japanese Empire in Kaunas, Lithuania.

During the Second World War, Sugihara helped thousands of #Jews flee Europe by issuing transit visas to them so that they could travel through Japanese territory, risking his job and the lives of his family.

In 1985, the State of Israel honored Sugihara as one of the Righteous Among the Nations for his actions.

2 January 1906 | A Jewish woman, Rachel Fuentes, was born in Constantinople (then the Ottoman Empire).

On 29 April 1944 she was deported from Drancy in occupied France to Auschwitz, where she arrived in a transport of 1,004 Jews on 2 May 1944. She did not survive.

In Auschwitz from August 1944.
He was transferred to Groß-Rosen, Flossenbürg and Natzweiler-Struthof camps.

He was liberated on 23 April 1945 near Donaueschingen.

He become a doctor.
Today he turns 97.

@EmpressOfHaB @auschwitzmuseum The place itself have this transforming power and even when people come unprepared, it moves people. This comes from the perspective of a guide. Yet, in case of younger visitors sometimes the 'joking' part is another coping mechanism, as in the peer group sometimes young people do not want to show (either to themselves or to others) that they are emotionally moved.
