poetaster

generalist dev, musician, poet. began with games dev. for years I've been involved with netzpolitik.org and diverse underground art projects. Currently doing a lot of #sailfishos alternate mobile os development. poetaster.de github.com/poetaster I also make audio toys poetaster.org

@khm there are ports to mobile linux like whisperfish (in rust, no less) on #Sailfishos which I use. But, frankly, most people use whatthefucksapp or telegram. I use the latter since whatthefucksapp is even more difficult to port than a signal app. As for trust and secrecy, what a fetish!

@mixal i have a really slow process which drives my engineer colleagues insane. I prototype on breadboard using a system I built (like ohmsynth from bastl) ... Translate to a 'clean' breadboard view in fritzing, layout pcb switching back and forth to schematic view. Most of the pros I work with do simulation in altium and a pcb layout in kicad. I dunno. I like the slow process and plugging around with bboard.

@alisynthesis thanks for sharing. Sweet.

@matthewconroy the "chimes" are a detuned guitar being played by a box fan, the bubbly noises are a grendel drone commander, and the noise is from a JMT drone synth (the black box with 18 knobs).

the song titles are things that I find disgusting. I don't know exactly why, but I thought disgusting was a good adjective for the sound, especially the second track.

a bunch of musical equipment wired to make drones - a couple of drone synths, some effects pedals, a mixer, and a guitar with a box fan blowing across the strings.

My mixer was making a bunch of crazy sounds a normal no-input mixer would struggle to do. Not just a clicking with timbre but complex chaotic messy huge thick gnarly stuff.

You can send one signal to the in-phase input and another to the out-of-phase (cold) one. You can send stuff to the xlr and phone inputs at the same time.

I haven’t done this yet but you could also have diodes, capacitors and stuff in between.

Playing with touch also works. It worked really well.

@poetaster I haven't got all the bugs out so I have not released a toepler+ binary yet. BUT, I did finish generic examples for rings, plaits and braids ... If you install the libs (STMLIB and BRAIDS, etc) they now have examples in the #arduino ide menu...

@mixal we're doing straight PWM for now. Either 48 or 98kHz.

@mixal Niek has finished a pcb design which we will test in the next couple of weeks. Something like the attached. Its a custom rp2350 design which will have open design files. I'm working on a through hole version but have 3 other projects in parallel. Will take time.

@maxwainwright of course this is your thing. Ideas are just smoke. But U built that amazing thing. Now post a recording.

Google #DeepMind has launched an open repository of formalized mathematics conjectures github.com/google-deepmind/for . For instance, the four Landau problems in analytic number theory are formalized at github.com/google-deepmind/for . They are soliciting further contributions to the database (at present it only contains a tiny fraction of the conjectures in the literature).

It is of course far easier to state an open problem than it is to prove it, but having some sort of standardized formulation of such problems is important first step if one is to hope to use automated tools to help make progress on these problems. If one naively asks an AI tool to formally solve an informally specified problem, it is far more likely that it could succeed on a technicality - for instance, by establishing a formal statement which contains an unintended edge case that can be handled trivially (e.g., if some key parameter is intended to be non-zero, but the formalization permits the parameter to vanish) - than it is to solve the problem as intended.

@maxwainwright also reminds me of alain wergefosse, a mixer musician from belgium/barcelona. Large mixers cross connected with lots of contact mics and ldrs patched in. He used to take those tablets that emit co2 when wet and put several on mics that were in feedback loops. Then he'd play his beard.

I’ve had this idea for a very long time. Never did it until yesterday. It’s fucking glorious. It is so so fucking good and it was my idea.

You just take a bunch of phone plugs and unscrew the barrel thing. Plug them into a mixer and patcg with crocodile clips. Suddenly you can do out of phase stuff, use the xlr inputs (just plug the plug bit in), split signals, do the kind of dead short mixing you’re not supposed to do. (Continued)

@maxwainwright hee, hee. My other ed did something along these lines with the mixer section of a tascam 4 track cassette recorder. Patch mania. It sounded like aphex twin being chased down a dark alley wearing tin can shoes and beating a frame drum while screaming. It was great.
