My retro computing niche is source code archaeology: the art of reconstructing maintainable source code from disassembly and reverse engineering. It's harder than it sounds but also fascinating and rewarding. I also enjoy working with unpopular or niche programming languages. I very much follow the beat of a different drum.

@drawkcab What's it about?

On the Apple II Lemonade Stand is an iconic game written in Applesoft BASIC. School children across the country were introduced to computers and basic economics with this game.

Did the Beeb have a counterpart BASIC game that every school child was familiar with back in the day?

I read somewhere that LogoWriter was a combination programming language AND word processor for the Apple II, C64, and MS DOS. I got curious and spun up a copy in an Apple II emulator. I figured out how to make the turtle move: FD 50, RT 90, FD 50, etc. How is this also a word processor and what benefit was there in combining Logo with it?

@matsuzine Absolutely!

Any general tips for doing well at a game of Hamurabi, of 101 BASIC Computer Games fame? I got the original BASIC source to compile on Linux, thanks to FreeBASIC, but I keep ending up a fink within a round or two. #Hamurabi #BASIC #retrogaming #FreeBASIC #retrocomputing #Linux

Are #Framework laptops prone to running hot enough that it feels uncomfortably warm? I'm looking at the Framework 16.

Can someone recommend a FOSS weather app for #android? I have one, but it sucks at providing info about severe weather. #askfedi

Did you know there's no such thing as a single bookworm? The tracks in books are usually made by larvae from a variety of beetles.

I learned so many fascinating tidbits like this from @shadychars in the podcast that's coming out Thursday. I know it's a holiday week, but don't miss it!

On June 29, 1994, I announced what turned into the FreeDOS Project.

That's 31 years ago today! And I thought what better way to celebrate the anniversary than by showing how to install FreeDOS.

We released FreeDOS 1.4 in April, so it's been out for a while. If you haven't installed 1.4 yet, here's what it looks like:

A meme. Two panels. The top panel shows a person praying "Please Ancestors. I need your guidance."

The bottom panel shows a prehistoric centipede-type invertibrate (perhaps Arthropleura?). Text reads "*Loud Skittering Noises*"

A screen capture made by João S. O. Bueno, from LinkedIn:
Al Sweigart: In most cases, learning to code with AI is like learning to cook by ordering off of a menu.
Luciano Ramalho on the replies:
Yes, but also the cook is drunk so he may put anchovies on your ice cream, regardless of what you ordered.

I find a lot of Haskell folks enjoy Raku once they're properly introduced, but what about the Zig crowd? They're very different languages, I know, but their respective developers both seem to note each language is fun in its own way.

@mjg @mwl @dmoonfire @cstross #Perl and #Rakulang being outside of the tech giant sphere may ultimately help them evolve without pressure from big corporations, until the right class of problem emerges for which each is a perfect fit.

Everybody hated on #Forth. Now Forth controls billions of USD, because Bitcoin's internal scripting language is Forth-like. Conversely, lots of CS students only know #Python and don't know how pointers work. The market will self-correct eventually.

TIOBE Index: SQL slides in programmer popularity stakes • DEVCLASS

"...Other notable movers include Rust, which slipped one slot on last year to number 18. Ada and R both moved into the top 20, to 11 and 14, from 25 and 21 respectively. Perl also moved up, from 27 to 13. The biggest slide was for Assembly, down from 13 to 19..."

@electron_greg That's fair. Good luck and have fun.

@electron_greg Can that thing accept an overdrive chip that bumps it to a midrange 486 or (quite a stretch) a weak Pentium?
