We in Israel are all sharing a collective "Now what?" kind of moment. We sat here over the last few days wondering for whom to root in Syria. Okay, that's not really true - nobody was rooting for Assad; the man was a less competent clone of his father. Still, the rebel forces are no great shakes, either.

The hopes were between both sides evaporating in a puff of negative energy, and an excuse to crush Iran.

Don't think anybody had "Terrorist makes economic overtures" on their Bingo card.

@Metrogram

Should they not have seen that coming?

Also, "First they came for the Tarot Card Readers, and I did nothing, for I am not a Tarot Card reader."

@GottaLaff

I for one would consider this to be a fascinating experiment.

Thanks. Sincerely, thank you.

Well, no matter what, he's my son and I love him and miss him.

For having expectations, I deserve to be disappointed.

I can't even say anything, because then I'm whining.

But I would have liked a little empathy.

It was wrong of me to expect any.

Expectations lead to disappointment. This is why I usually eschew expectations.

One gets what one deserves. Always. The calculus is perfect. So expectations are useless.

kacha.

Yep. Just me.

Thank you for that empathetic reply! Appreciate it.

- Cuts off his entire family, refusing to engage or talk with them, goes out of his way to not speak with them, see them, or have anything to do with them, even if the conversation would consist of dancing around our differences, just to tell him they love him; and cares about every oppressed person in the world and has no room in his heart for his family, because they are vastly divergent in their viewpoints...

...or is that just me?

Hello. This is my #Introduction.

I have been working with Web technologies since 1992. I have co-founded two browser companies, Opera Software and Vivaldi Technologies. I was CEO at Opera and I am CEO at Vivaldi.

I am a strong proponent of open standards. I believe in building feature rich products that can be adapted to the needs of users without collecting information about usage. I believe no company has the right to profile their users.

Hey friends, if you see this, could you introduce me to someone worth following on this app?

After fifteen years on that other app, it feels daunting to start again from scratch.

@Lana

I've been using "Orange Mussolini," but yours is much more economical.

Every statement about Donald Trump becomes more honest if you replace his name with "serial rapist".

@ninedragons

My pleasure - I hope my explanation wasn't overdone. I get very talkative when people ask me things.

2024-11-13

@ninedragons

A Shabbos Goy is someone you can turn to for this kind of help. It's not really considered a compliment, but context is everything: Colin Powell, for example, joked about being the Shabbos Goy for his adoptive family.

In Israel, where 80% of the people are Jews, it can be hard to find a gentile (depending on the locale, of course) if your lights go out.

Again, highly specific and proscribed methods for employing a gentile's services. It's not willy-nilly.

2024-11-13

@ninedragons

Sorry for the delayed reply - it's been a long day.

500-characters oversimplification:

There are a whole bunch of things that Jews are not permitted to do on Shabbos (the Sabbath). Among these are cooking and turning electricity on and off. We're also not allowed to ask for help with these things directly.

Gentiles are not restricted in this way - and it is permissible, in limited and very proscribed ways, to ask them to, for example, adjust the A/C or turn on a light.

So Mike Huckabee as Ambassador to Israel, huh?

Two thoughts:

He'll fit right in with the right-wing government here. His love of Israel is apparent and if a base of US support for Israel is a fundamental of the new administration, then if Orange Mussolini decides Israel isn't needed for his agenda anymore, it will become harder politically to kick us to the curb.

Second, it's now one person easier to find a Shabbos Goy.
