Oh, I am liking how this is coming out!
Waiting on some ribbon to arrive by mail to put covers and ties on.

A different attempt at the homework (2 views of the same scene) where I only liked one. A honey bee on an azalea flower on campus.

#watercolor #bloomscrolling #bee
Mini watercolor painting of a honey bee on a pinky-purple azalea flower. The bee is sitting right in the middle of the flower, with the triangular petals framing it. A few dark green leaves frame the flower.

Class week 2 homework: two views or compositional approaches to the same scene/photo. We found these dandelions growing in an old stone wall on a walk the other day. I like dandelions and I like the way plants grow in stone walls: win-win!

#watercolor #bloomscrolling
Two mini watercolors of dandelions growing from a stone wall. One shows a closeup of an open flower, a few leaves, and a couple of buds. The other shows the whole plant, a whorl of leaves and flowers, and the stones in the wall.

I'm taking another painting course, this one is miniature watercolor and pen. This is my 3rd class with the teacher in Japan. (American women, resident in Japan. She's learning Japanese techniques and teaching Western painting.) Having classes online makes the class more convenient and allows me to have classes with instructors I'd never be able to learn from otherwise, but I think it works better because I already had experience. I'm not sure how well it works for someone just learning.

Anyway, we have developed tiny travel kits and mini booklets. Mine are accordion folded watercolor paper. These are about 3x1.5 inches (7.5x3.8 cm.) I'm really enjoying this, and am looking forward to having a small book of my work by the end of class.

It's so close that the beak is partially out of the frame.

An early fancy daffodil. This one is in a very protected spot - only a few of the hardier naturalizing plain yellow variety are out in the more exposed parts of the yard.

A daffodil with fanned almost white outer petals and multiple inner trumpets in yellow, white, and peach. The sun is making the yellow glow.

Last year, I did an Instagram story takeover for Letters to a Pre-Scientist (prescientist.org/) and I introduced some key concepts in archaeology and related geosciences - here's the two-part cartoon I drew to introduce stratigraphy!

A two-panel cartoon showing side-by-side vertical panels. The left panel shows stratigraphic layers down through the dirt, including artefacts. Text on the left says 'STRATIGRAPHY' with each letter aligned to a layer from top to bottom. A cartoon girl on the surface says "Analysing the way layers have built up tells us about what people have done here through time!" The panel on the right shows complex stratigraphic layers including pits and burrows cutting into deeper layers, with artefacts and the letters S, T, T, I, P, Y, G scattered throughout. A cartoon girl on the surface says "...but it can get complicated!"

Dark pine forest, but only the vertical trunks of almost identical trees are visible. In between, a fallen birch with white bark did not fall to the ground, but stopped on a pine at a 45 degree angle, disturbing the order.

I got in the student center elevator yesterday and for the first time noticed the wavy light reflections from the ceiling lights on the metal walls. Something to do with the round lights - the walls are definitely flat!

For day one of my is my favourite thing I made this year.

There's a heron who hangs out in my local park. I'm fairly besotted with her, so this painting is in her honour.

An acrylic painting of a heron in profile peering out from green and gold reeds.
