#OtD 4 May 1897 Giovannina Caleffi was born in Italy. Fought the fascists in the Spanish civil war with her husband, who was murdered by Stalinists. She was then jailed by German Nazis, then Italian fascists, then joined the Italian resistance https://stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/10458/giovanina-caleffi
IMO the depressing thing is not that the mainstream media with its corporate owners hedges but that the little ones do too. Like Mother Jones writing a headline called "How RFK Jr. Falsely Denied His Connection to a Deadly Measles Outbreak in Samoa" (https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2024/07/how-rfk-jr-falsely-denied-his-connection-to-a-deadly-measles-outbreak-in-samoa/) instead of "RFK Jr Helped Kill Kids, Then Lied About It".
like if the liberal media with much less corporate funding is doing it, what hope does the mainstream media have?

I wonder when the media will realize that pleasing a dictator, especially one so erratic, is a fool's errand -- look at the "reciprocal tariffs". the option is either to forever chase an unattainable approval, or to say "fuck that" and do their goddamn jobs: journalism.
Not hedging about things, not with qualifiers, except for something like "Trump, convicted felon who [list of things]..."
Just actual journalism that pisses off the government, like it should.

In July 1942 she was deported to #Auschwitz. She was murdered in a gas chamber right after selection.

Arguably, the global billionaires are in a tustle with god over who shall inherit the earth:
"The meek are demonstrably stupid - they pay taxes, after all", say the b'aires.
"The rich - ie, clever - white men shall inherit the earth (along w/ multiple wives & offspring)."
"If god had been smarter & whiter, he would have surely agreed."
Some say, "Even if billions perish in the coming climate catastrophe... we shouldn’t be too concerned".
@are0h My searches return nothing relevant on pixelfed. Is it ok if I ask you to share any links or information you may have on this?
Thanks, regardless. I at least know now to be cautious about that platform.
So, there’s this story going around about this white woman getting close to a million dollars because she’s fundraising after calling a Black kid nigger in a park, and there seems to be a lot of shock being expressed at how she’s been able to raise that kind of money.
We just saw it a few weeks ago with Pixelfed raising a 100k in a few days.
Trump became president a second time using the same strategy.
Bigots support each other for publicly displaying their unrepentant bigotry.
There’s always money for hate in the West.
Always.
Radio nerditry: every time I visit NYC and remember to turn on a radio, I marvel at the thriving and vibrant Brooklyn pirate radio broadcasting scene. My pal @pirateradiomap maintains an awesome archive of them at https://pirateradiomap.com .
@courtcan I'll be rewatching Rogue One at the end of the season to gauge if I appreciate it more. I thought it was ok but have I feeling I'll like it much more now 🤞🏿
To be fair, I still find Andor to be by far the best Star Wars storytelling, ever.
It's realistic, mature, and mostly not about action sequences but rather human behavior and the true costs of oppression and the fight against oppression.
I love the nuance and details of the story, but this season has more overused story beats than the first season, and that's what's bothering me.
Overall, still great and highly recommended.
BREAKING:
@catsalad Me.
The second 3 episode arc of this second season of Andor is less satisfying than the somewhat disappointing first arc.
The pattern seems to be 2 episodes of buildup and one of resolution, which is fine, theoretically.
While episode 3 was excellent, episode 6 is marred by the "person who didn't follow instructions getting someone killed", a much too convenient, unearned revenge scene, and barely managed high stakes switch tropes.
Lazy and bad all around. Damn🙁
