@Alon @Colinvparker "or at least spending, if not quite income" ... or wealth. I don't see why people born rich from inheritance should not spend much - in fact, quite the opposite. But I don't have good numbers at hand :/

2024-06-11

@Alon Any specific reason to focus on income instead of wealth? AFAIK the inequality with the later is much more concerning, especially taking inheritance into account, no?

@zeenix Arguably the Brothers of Italy are among the biggest winners - and they are clearly anti-Putin.

The GNOME Foundation Board election ends on the 11th at 23:59 UTC, which is less than 48 hours away!

If you're a Foundation member and haven't voted yet, please don't forget to vote!

Efforts like the STF grant (made possible by @sonny and @tbernard) show that, with active leadership and direct community involvement, the board can become a powerful vehicle for positive change throughout the whole project. So let's make sure we all vote!

Final results:
CDU/CSU 30%
AfD 15.9%
SPD 13.9%
Green 11.9%
Sahra Wagenknecht 6.2%
FDP 5.2%
Die Linke 2.7%
FW 2.7%
Volt 2.6%
Die Partei 1.9%
Tierschutzpartei 1.4%

Honestly, relative to polls, it's not even that bad; Volt and Die Partei voters at the EU level mostly vote Green or maaaybe SPD at the federal level. There isn't much of a story here beyond "the economy in Germany was bad in 2022-3 due to unusual exposure to Russia and is only starting to recover."

What a great time for the camera system. Imx258 driver is getting a major upgrade and megi just dropped the most important commit related to it this morning. Fixed the suspend issue so now the rear camera works after you suspend!!!!

Showtime, the video player I'm developing for #GNOME has entered Incubator and is available on the GNOME Nightly repo for testing :blobfoxflooftea:

I'm hoping for it to replace Totem (Videos) in GNOME 48 and I will publish it on Flathub soon.

Setting up GNOME Nightly: nightly.gnome.org/

@vancha not just closer, they actually work! Just not very well yet

@Luigi311 yep, it was added in the context of figuring out exactly that issue for pmOS. But we went with a different (but similar) solution there.

This one is important for some #LinuxMobile devices like the #Librem5 and #PinePhone and once the update lands in #postmarketOS they should finally work ootb there \o/

#wireplumber 0.5.3 has been released \o/

As a reminder: #wireplumber is the session manager and therefore the "brain" of #PipeWire. The later is intentionally kept simple, not handling anything policy related.

The version has one fix I'm particular happy about:
Fixed camera device deduplication logic when the same device is available
through both V4L2 and libcamera, and the libcamera one groups multiple V4L2
devices together.

Signal strongly opposes the newest #ChatControl proposal in Europe.

Let there be no doubt: we will leave the EU market rather than undermine our privacy guarantees.

This proposal--if passed and enforced against us--would require us to make this choice.

It's surveillance wine in safety bottles.

The Pipewire Camera Portal support for Chromium has finally landed!

Huge Kudos to Michael Olbrich @ Pengutronix for pushing this through!

This is great news, and means we'll soon start seeing real integration for cameras which are supported by libcamera through pipewire!

@cas 1. yes
2. I'm still optimistic that there will be at least a few good things coming out of this. Like - I do want my hardware to be able to run stuff locally and not be dependent on the cloud. So having a NPU that makes certain common things faster/more efficient *is* something I'm looking forward to.

ngl it never quite hit home just how directly shareholders drive the direction of organisations. Seeing all the new windows laptops qcom and Microsoft are announcing, the "copilot+" bullshit, it's just so disconnected from what consumers actually want.

but hey, new things, big changes, wooo hyyype... The underlying message is that Qualcomm have just announced a brand new avenue for growth in the somewhat stagnating silicon industry. Now we can all go build "NPU"s and tell consumers the hardware they have is old and slow and shite.

Meanwhile M$, QC, and even intel/AMD get to leverage the aesthetic of growth, and line go up.

Turns out that there were still two things missing to make this work OOTB. One thing was a missing package - already fixed - and the other will be fixed in Wireplumber 0.5.3, due in a couple of days.

@whynothugo @cas Aggregating cursor events was dropped in Gnome in order to allow games an such to have better latency. Regarding the issue at hand: AFAIK the "proper" solution landed recently: gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland
