Linux smartphone users, what phone and OS do you prefer and why?

I'm in the process of learning about Linux OS on smartphones with the goal of eventually using a Linux phone as my daily driver.

What features are most important to you?
What do you mostly do with your phone other than call/text?
What about mobile banking?? >_>
Which phone do you feel pairs best with Linux?

Screen reader users: I am so sorry for what you're about to experience...

Sent the fix upstream and megi said hes making the change on his kernel. So at this point i think the rear camera driver is as complete as can be so now all that remains is tuning and improvements in the camera stacks. will need some tuning and the addition of autofocus for example. Theres nothing that should be stopping it though on the kernel side anymore.

Should hopefully be getting less artifacts on the PPP rear camera sometime soon:tm:

@pine64 #PinePhonePro update: sent wifi, bluetooth, and modem patch upstream

lore.kernel.org/all/20260112-p

at this point if you would like to test it, please reply to the patches with a Tested-by: Name <email> as shown in this link

kernel.org/doc/html/v5.7/proce

i think i will get battery/charger next and then switch the pmOS kernel to use mainline Linux. if u would like a feature of the ppp to be included, please let me know and be available to test my changes

@dos @linmob to add to this the on arch for me charges up to 11w. So not sure whats going on with testing on their side. This was also measure by power at the wall and not what the phone itself was reporting.

Pinephone Pro charge curve in archlinux that shows charging at 11w or so at peak and then slowly slowing down.

is anyone able to test the modem patch for the #Pine64 #PinePhonePro?

i dont have a sim card for the device as its unfortunately not my daily driver. will give u pmbootstrap commands and the kernel tree so u can build it locally to test. can also field any questions if u have any

bonus: u can get credit in the linux kernel for testing the patch too! would need name and email for that

i think ill also try to get wifi and bluetooth working too. phosh seems to recognize the modem with my patch

Finally got around to finishing the review. I know its no longer a phone that is in production but its still nice to see where it is now at its end of production and to see what was possible on it. Software on it will hopefully continue to be improved upon so hopefully it is currently in its worst state now and will get better in time but only time will tell.

Thought I'd give a quick glance of the #Pine64 blog to see what's been going on. Pleasantly surprised to read this:
pine64.org/2025/08/16/august_2
"We admit that both PineStore and Pine64 have dropped the ball and it has been very difficult to restart and recover after everything that has happened in the past."

Okay, so I guess I still have some hope for them. :moomin_hmm:
I actually welcome the discontinuation of #PinePhonePro, it's better if devs just focus on one affordable platform. And yeah, maybe not launching a bunch of new products when the existing ones still need more testing and/or have known defects would have helped. But I'm not buying anything new from them until I can be sure that their priorities are right. Right now I'm happier just not having any smartphone at all and will probably buy a cheap dumb soldering iron to replace/repair my #Pinecil that no longer works with USB-C.

@flypig giving it a try on my #PinePhonePro and it worked like a charm, despite some video players breaking on that device
(it's a mainline port, not hybris based, and breaks some multimedia players -- E.g., microTube errors with "Internal data stream error" even if it works on Xperia 10iii)

If you're getting errors such as:

error: failed retrieving file 'danctnix-testing.db' from p64.arikawa-hi.me : The requested URL returned error: 403
error: failed retrieving file 'danctnix.db' from p64.arikawa-hi.me : The requested URL returned error: 403
error: failed to synchronize all databases (failed to retrieve some files)

You need to update your /etc/pacman.conf.

Replace all instances of "p64.arikawa-hi.me" with "archmobile.mirror.danctnix.org"

Newer images (and the current factory image for PineTab 2) does not have this issue.

Ich sichere mal mein #PostmarketOS vom #PinePhonePro weg, um mir #Mobian noch mal anzusehen. Leider habe ich keine freien, funktionierenden SD-Karten mehr übrig :neocat_googly_shocked:

Just a heads up some, some carriers instantly flag the and as routers probably due to the EG25-G in them. Had my primary line on suspended and required me to reinsert my Sim on a supported device, pixel 6, and tons of back and forth to get it reactivated. It trigger due to being on the unlimited plan so now I'm on their cheapest by the gig plan with only 2GB. Jokes on them I never leave the house/WiFi so I'll never pass 2GB and it'd $44 -> $10

Lilbits: Phosh 0.50.0, unofficial Windows Subsystem for FreeBSD, and Google Japan’s impractical keyboards

Some folks at Google Japan have a habit of designing impractical keyboards. A few years ago we saw a single-row keyboard with every letter, number and character laid out along a 5.4 foot strip. There are also Teacup, bubble wrap, and spoon bending keyboards, among others.

Now the company has introduced its latest horribly inconvenient keyboard: the Gboard Dial Version is made of rotary dials […]
