Hello everyone! Velvelyne (a funky skeletal typeface) has just been released on our website! velvetyne.fr/fonts/velvelyne/
Velvelyne is published under the CUTE conditions, which are different from your plain old SIL OFL, so please check it out. #opensource #font #typeface #velvelyne

Image of the Velvelyne typeface, which looks like a regular font with all the flesh removed leaving only a bare single line skeleton, on a white background. Text reads "single line à haute tension".

Type Designers: I am available for freelance work — in particular I am looking to do some more python tool development.
I have been building all sorts of custom extensions for @RoboFont, tooling for optimizing kerning large families, proofing tools, and even PDF invoice tools using DrawBot/Google Sheet/Dropbox.
My website has my GitHub link and more work!

What would say happened (outstandingly) in the world of type design and font engineering in 2024? What would you remember from last year? What would you say to someone who was in a professional coma for a year for example?

I finally moved this out of Google Docs Preview page and self-hosted, as part of my website redesign.

Should work a lot better on various devices, and more responsive too. Hope that helps.

Why is there no VF interpolation previewer for Glyphs?

I guess there is now. Needs vanilla+fonttools.

@typographica in my head (no idea if my theory is legit): the Book weight refers to the thickness of the old Regular weight when printed in books (using lead characters), which is thicker than our current Regular, which is more or less based on digitization from the matrix (and not the printed form, hence why lighter). Am I clear? Does it make sense?

I have to start working again in 1.5 month after a year of absence (pregnancy sickness + maternity leave). I think I am starting to panick. How do I make myself exist again in this professional network? I know how to be a freelancer, but how do you do it whilst taking care of a 9 month breastfed baby? Freelancing parents, please give me your tips.

It is quite disheartening to witness in real time the collapse of French public art schools (including the one where I teach), among so many other institutions. I know there are worse things happening now and for a while in the world, but if this process of destruction continues, many of them will close in the next few years.

@AleksandraSamulenkova of course! It’s a question of context and knowing more or less what you do. Dissonance is beautiful when mastered, reforming orthography is necessary when outdated, choosing the straight apostrophe can be relevant if conveying a purpose.

2024-10-08

@AleksandraSamulenkova imo typography is all about a bunch of conventions put up over decades to create a sense of harmony (just like music) or common understanding (just like orthography). The wrong apostrophe might not be harmonious even though we get it. Also, those rules make your life easier; you know what to do in a certain context and you don’t have to think much about it when you have so many decisions to make already. Better to fight conventions when it is meaningful and worth a debate.
