@KanaMauna @futurebird So much our respect of past technology skips over that it was only available to the rich.

Most of us were much more likely to be maintaining the hypocaust than enjoying warm floors.

@peterbrown I'm a mechanical engineer and mild/moderate dyslexic. 😀

The 3d thinking is crazy strong.

@peterbrown @kim@fedi. Depends on the kind of dyslexia.

There are primarily two kinds, phonetic dyslexia and lexographic dyslexia. Phonetic is a trouble with being able to break apart the sounds and connect them to the written word, while lexographic dyslexia is a problem with flat and written symbols. Other still have difficulty recalling the shapes of letters. Some people have all of the above, or mix.

One of the attributes is an overdeveloped sense of a 3D, to the point that 2D recognition, which is reading, suffers. Which is why dyslexics get b d p and q confused, because the are the same letter in 3D. Written languages without a symmetry issue are easier for some dyslexics, but not all.

Cursive works for some but not others. Cursive's lack of symmetry can be helpful, but can be absolutely torture if you struggle with 2D symbol retention.

@kim it could mean a person has mild dyslexia. 1 in 5 people have some level of dyslexia. Recognizing is easier than reading. Reading just isn't automatic.

My kid is severely dyslexic. It is frankly amazing how biased our world is against dyslexia. It is definitely an area where inclusive thinking is needed.

For , we have a fossil from our editor Huasheng Huang.

This is Grimmipollis burmanica (IBED-T 40.976/IBED-T 40.974), a sopberry flowering plant from the late Eocene of Central Myanmar. Named in honour of Dr. Eric Grimm (1951-2020) for his palynology contributions.

@TheJen Historical costuming dorks like me for one.

I don't knit or crochet, but there are people who looooove vintage patterns. Modernizing making things much more accessible as vintage instructions can be challenging.

@artcollisions Sound like one of those days. Hugs.

@artcollisions Hungry and in pain. That's a great combination.

That is where you go buy milk shakes for the family and just set theirs out. Get their blood sugar up so they can be more reasonable.

@artcollisions mine is complaining that discussing logistical challenges means "we don't want to come to her school event. "

Contrary and emotional, teens are so much fun. /s

@hollie My kid is severely dyslexic, to the point that reading will never be easy. If AI could open up more reading avenues for her, I can't say no even if i have severe reservations.

Things like textbooks and technical content, the obscure stuff. With the right interface, her dyslexia may not be as disabling. Most screen readers are (to my knowledge) are aimed at people with limited vision, not some studying a text book that needs that paragraph read outloud again.

I don't trust Amazon on this, tho. This is a way to sell audiobooks without paying someone to read it. Disabled people are being used as a cover for a financial decision. They would not bother to develop tools to actually help people like my daughter.

@elfkin I tend to do corsets and what not, so cutting is a no-no.

2025-05-22

@elfkin but neat tool!

2025-05-22

@elfkin I use a stiletto for that. I'd rather not cut threads if I can avoid it.
