@rustoleumlove A small clarification. Excessive rainfall is predicted by WPC, Weather Prediction Center, and hydrology is in the domain of the National Water Center. It gets even more confusing because individual forecasts at gage locations are done at the 13 River Forecast Centers (RFC). NWC runs the National Water Model and the flood Inundation mapping available on the link you provided. But at the end of the day, it's a lot of different centers but it is all one team.

@jsclark that sunset photo has some very strong Catan Boardgame vibes.

This is probably the most stark image from the Airborne River Survey of the Green River of #Kentucky. You think you have a mental picture of what floods look like, then you get this image. The mostly flooded town of Calhoun, KY is featured center of image.

#NOAA Twin Otter imaged the Major #flooding on the Green River #KY yesterday. It's utterly amazing how much water remains. nohrsc.noaa.gov/snowsurvey/pho

Significant, generational and historic #flooding across the Ohio River Valley following multiple days of heavy rainfall and severe storms. You can see the extent of the flooding in the Sentinel-1 #SAR derived flood mapping I made in support of operations here. I have masked out normal water detection from previous Sentinel-1 images so I'm only highlighting the floods. A highlight of the #Flood inundation that can be seen from the Sentinel-1 SAR satellite in imagery acquired over the Ohio River Valley on 6 April 2025 @ 23:00 UTC.

The Eyewall: Potential for catastrophic flooding by the weekend in the Mid-South and near the Ohio Valley

"...The National Weather Service in Paducah, KY did not mince words this afternoon in their briefing on the upcoming rainstorm across the Ohio Valley: “Significant and potentially historic rainfall will begin Wednesday afternoon, with numerous rounds of heavy rain continuing into the first half of the weekend, leading to potentially catastrophic flash flooding.”

@ai6yr even less mincier words by the Lower Mississippi River Forecast Center, "Potential Generational Flood Event". This region is in the National Water Center Public Flood Inundation Mapping area, available on water.noaa.gov. I wrote a blog article on how to access it here. shawncarter.blog/flood-inundat

@AwattoAnalog I'm a mechanical watch guy..... But, this is something I could get behind.

Should we be concerned about the loss of weather balloons?
Most of the time, not a big deal. But in critical times, the losses will be felt.

@iclavijos Buxton is fine, but Leigh Diffy was just an entire ladder rung upwards in comparison. Although, I'll admit I won't miss, 'Hello, Palou!'

@yabellini @maelle amaze, amaze, amaze! I absolutely fell in love with that weird little guy.

@me @ppn I immediately noticed that one. Was disappointed to see the crystal is acrylic at that price point.

@camless that's correct! They have almost no lume left in them, though.

Brought out a vintage Marathon Government Issued #watch today. It's a mechanical wind, has a very satisfying ting ting ting sound, and a super smooth second hand sweep. Super tiny though..

Did you know that you can package a complete #QGIS :qgis: project (incl. all your layers and data) in a single #Geopackage file, e.g. to move it to another system?

Practical examples, on the new hub:

@chrfrde looks like you got some good seeing conditions. That's a really fantastic gif you shared of your work.

@arstechnica Ars don't call this a buy out. It's not. It's a questionably legal resignation with absolutely no guarantee of pay or time off. Focus on bullet #4, that's the actual story.
