Satellite map of România viewed from space. The country displays its distinctive shape, with the Carpathian Mountains forming a prominent arc across the center, appearing as dark-green, forested ridges. The mountain chain curves like a reversed 'C' or horseshoe, dividing România into three central regions. Inside this arc lies Transylvania, visible as a green elevated plateau. The southern region shows the Wallachian Plain in lighter browns and tans, indicating agricultural lands. The Danube River is visible along the southern border, and the Black Sea coastline appears on the east edge. The mountains show the highest elevations with some snow-capped peaks visible as white spots. The Danube Delta region appears as a distinctive green wetland area where the river meets the Black Sea.

Swiss government open-source catalog: Under Article 9 of the “Federal Act on the Use of Electronic Means to Carry Out Official Tasks” (#EMBAG / #LMETA), federal authorities must publish the source code of software they develop or commission, marking a step toward greater #digitalSovereignty. The #OSS Catalog lists around 60 #opensource projects with #swisstopo’s #STAC API and the mapping application #KADASAlbireo among them.

New article! How do we go about using AI to automate point symbol generation? Shuaiqing Wang, Li Shen and colleagues have a investigate, with the process and an example shown below doi.org/10.1080/15230406.2025. Data and code at doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.29 #GISchat

A flowchart diagram showing a two-step 'template-render' framework for map symbol generation. The process begins with a user input icon on the left. Step 1 (Template Generation) is shown in a light green box: user input and a knowledge-guided prompt flow into an LLM (represented by a robot icon), which produces a symbol description or 'template' (shown as a document icon). Step 2 (Visual Rendering) is shown in a light blue box: the symbol description flows into a T2I model (represented by a 3D cube icon), which synthesizes a visual symbol from the description and outputs a point symbol or 'render' (shown as a red map pin icon on a folded map). Arrows connect each component from left to right, illustrating the sequential workflow from user input to final rendered map symbolA diagram illustrating point symbol concept generation using 'Zoo' as an example. On the left, a pink box shows user input: 'Zoo' or 'Design a map symbol for Zoo'. An arrow labeled 'LLM' points to a green box containing the symbol description: 'Symbol of the Zoo, abstract 2D style, white background, stylized image with animal silhouettes and tree elements, rounded rectangle shape with curved top, simple lines for texture.' An arrow labeled 'T2I model' points to the final point symbol on the right: a rounded square icon with dark green background showing silhouettes of two animals (appearing to be a lion and elephant) facing each other under a tree canopy, with a white border and rounded corners.

We've created a way to display interactive maps in the browser, completely client-side! #gis #gischat

Drop your data in as #csv or #apache #parquet file, and your vector shapefile as a #geojson, and your map is ready to go!

It's hosted on #GitHub pages (so it's free!) but can be embedded anywhere

New article! Ping Yin explores parental mobility during the perinatal period using geotagged social media data, including both fathers (who are often overlooked) and mothers. Mothers reduced long-distance and int. travel during pregnancy and after birth, whereas fathers did so only after birth. Fathers had more adjustments to their daily activities during the pregnancy, spending more time at home and healthcare facilities and less on recreation and food services. #GISchat doi.org/10.1080/15230406.2025.

A stacked bar chart showing the number and type of migrations across four pregnancy phases: pre-pregnancy, first trimester, second-third trimester, and postpartum. Each bar is divided into four categories: intracounty (light green), intrastate (medium green), interstate (beige/tan), and international (dark teal). The second-third trimester period shows the highest total migrations at approximately 24, with 11 intracounty, 8 interstate, 3 intrastate, and 2 international moves. Pre-pregnancy shows about 6 total migrations (1 intracounty, 1 intrastate, 4 interstate, and 1 international). First trimester shows about 3 migrations (1 intracounty, 1 intrastate, and 1 interstate). Postpartum shows about 10 migrations (5 intracounty, 1 intrastate, and 4 interstate). The y-axis ranges from 0 to 25, representing the number of migrations.
