Please Note: If you receive a reply that looks like this, it is fake and a malicious scam. Do not click on the links in the post. Report the post for spam to the Pawb moderation team and we will handle it.

Mastodon will never ask for your identification on our servers (or in general). On Pawb servers, we control the operations and we also will not ask for identification in this manner either. If that was required for some reason, we would contact the user directly and privately and handle it that way.

As The Fediverse becomes more popular, scams like this will become more common and likely more sophisticated as well. Stay safe out there!

@itsOasus I love this approach honestly. It passes off the need for identification verification to another party who would already have done that (payment processors), and also benefits the service you're looking to sign-up for.

So this is how Newgrounds is apparently handling age verification RE: UK's Online Safety Act.

Their ultimate solution is... unique.

Regarding age verification, here is our current plan for UK users:

1. If your account is more than ten years old, we will assume you are currently over 18. This is in line with one of the methods of effective age assurance, which involves paying a third party to match your email address against some sort of database of scraped data, which determines if your email has been in use for a long time. We have our own long-term data, so we'll use that instead.

2. If your account ever bought Supporter status with a credit card and we can confirm that with the payment processor, we will assume you are over 18 because you need to be 18 in the UK to have a credit card.

3. If your account ever bought Supporter status more than two years ago, we will assume you are over 18 because you need to be at least 16 to have a Paypal or debit card in the UK (assuming we are right about this).

4. If none of the above applies, you will have the opportunity to pay a small one-time fee via credit card as confirmation of your age.

We are not planning to offer things like ID checks or facial recognition because these require us to pay a third party to confirm each person. Because Newgrounds runs at a loss and doesn't monetize users very well, this is not an option for us. As Wired noted, Big Tech is the only winner of the Online Safety Act because smaller websites can't afford to keep up with this sort of regulation.

Saved and liberated the books I "bought" at Amazon for my Kindle. Amazon will stop offering the "Download & transfer via USB" option, so I have downloaded all 210 books. After downloading, I hunt them through Calibre and a certain plugin to remove the DRM stuff, convert the books to EPUB format so I have my private backup and can put them on a new ebook reader that is more open than the Amazon walled garden. And in future I will buy my eBooks someplace else. #ByeAmazon

Download & transfer via USB
Transfer Tip: After downloading, use your USB cable to connect your computer and Kindle. Your Kindle will appear as a drive on your computer. Copy your downloaded file from your computer to your Kindle's documents folder.

Starting 26 February 2025, the ‘Download & Transfer via USB’ option will no longer be available. You can still send Kindle books to your Wi-Fi enabled devices by selecting the ‘Deliver or Remove from Device’ option. Learn more about managing downloads

With Books I and II of Noss Saga, the stage was set and our heroes started on their quest. Now with Relinquished Realms, as the group separates, their quest takes different paths for the same goal, the saving of #Noss. Joaquin Baldwin (@joabaldwin) has created a beautifully sprawling epic that combines the deep and rich storytelling of Robert Jordan, the sensible details of Phillip Pullman, and fanciful nature of J.R.R. Tolkien. The story that unfolds makes this evident. The world-building, the storytelling, the character design, even the included artwork. It all draws the reader in and leaves them with the desire to read more, see more, know more. Baldwin has done a phenomenal job with all of these facets of the story, and even more. Noss Saga is nothing short of wonderful thus far, and I cannot wait for what lies in store for our heroes and for Noss itself.

Noss Saga III: Relinquished Realms

A Southern Wolf Review

“Black sails billowed… through the salty sea, weaving among the dragon-like vines…” thus beginning Noss Saga: Relinquished Realms, the 3rd installment of Joaquin Baldwin’s (@joabaldwin) epic series. As with the second book of the series, Masks of the Miscam, the action picks up right where the last one left off. Only now, our group has separated into two, with each having the shared goal of saving Noss from the ravages of The Red Stag, and now others hungry for power too. We see so much more of Noss, her peoples, animals, cultures, beliefs, politics, and more. More allies present themselves, but with them come new challenges, even more enemies, and a growing sense that time is not on our hero’s side in this epic saga.

Illustration process! I started with a video ref so I could pick the best frames and frankenstein a mockup of the perfect pose, then sketched over that in Procreate, then painted most of the base color in Photoshop before taking it back to Procreate again.

First loose sketch over a photo of me posing with a knife, leg up. A bunch of other photos are arranged at the bottom, of me taking similar poses (I cut and paste the parts of my body I liked most from each photo to create the final larger mockup)
Sketch of the full wolf character with rough black lines over white. Super loose, but trying to find the forms of the armor plates and details.
First paint pass with basic colors for each part of the armor, with reference pics of beetle wings (elytra) so I could color pick to get the shiny metallic effects.
Final piece. A black-furred anthropomorphic wolf stands defensively on one leg while holding up an obsidian-bladed dagger. He is standing by the water, seemingly practicing the pose with no enemies in front of him. He is wearing a colorful lamellar armor of plates and tassels of striking blues, greens, and purples.

@joabaldwin So like, FYI... The metal cylinders in some (specifically ionizing) smoke detectors contained a radioactive resource, Americium-241. Typically it's marked on the top or side if it does contain Am-241, so yours is probably a photo-electric kind. But still, like... Be careful taking a hanmer to a smoke detector, you might cause a contamination issue, and Am-241 is kinda nasty. 😅

It costs around $50 million every year to ensure Signal is robust and available all over the world for anyone whenever they need it.

And as a nonprofit, that money comes from all of you; the people who believe that we all deserve a place to speak freely.

I think it needs to be spelled out fairly clearly: spurious reports with no legitimate reason for submission are absolutely an abuse of Rule 7, and will be handled as such.

Reporting brand new accounts because they haven't had a chance to fill in their information yet is a very good example of this. It's uncalled for, it wastes our time as moderators and admins, and is emblematic of an unwelcoming attitude towards new comers on the instance. From this point forward, we aren't going to tolerate actions like this anymore.

The report system serves as a way to report legitimate grievances against the instance rules, and it should absolutely be uses for that. Spurious reports only makes it harder for us to act against legitimate ones.
