Snake-A-Roid is coming close to the end, finally! This week I've been tightening things up so it's ready to kick out the door.
I wasn't quite happy with one of the bosses that fired aliens out it's eye. The only one to do it. So I added a large spawner on it's tail instead.

Nearly all the bosses still fire lasers from their eyes, of course! Certain species of space fish and nuclear octopi do that too.

A screenshot of Snake-A-Roid, a vector-like arcade game. This is one of the boss levels, where a coiled enemy is travelling down a central column. It is made of a giant eye, several smaller segments, and a large spawner as the tail. Various coloured aliens have been spawned and are moving about the level, and the player's snake is towards the right of the playfield. The boss health is depicted as a bar at the bottom of the screen and is at about 60%. The score is in the top right, sitting at 9135.

BUGFIX: Don't create poison powerups that crash game, when mashing the controls on the steam deck.

All week I've been testing it on the deck and only stumbled onto it as soon as I put it in the review queue.. literally the next instance I played after clicking the button.

Bah.

Oh for goodness sake... been testing Snake-A-Roid and tidying up loose ends all week.. go and throw it into the review queue, and immediately find a crash bug on the steamdeck.
Typical.

Had a quick play on my old Diablo 3 account and... I was clearly having fun with names at the time!
May I present, Chunderbaws the Barbarian! With his pals, Timmy Mallet the Crusader, Harry the Wizard, Santalum and Precious the Demon Hunters, Heebie Jeebie the Witch Doctor and Garibaldi the Monk.
Don't ask. I have no idea...

Five bugs remaining...
Four audio related ( a couple of missing tracks, nicer music transitions, cap the some sounds from overlapping, and normalise all the music again )
And images for the achievements, as I forgot to do them.

Been a productive weekend!

Eighteen bugs left to go, at the moment... really am in danger of actually getting this out the door.

Slightly terrifying.

2025-05-29

I have finally set up a machine to finish off Snake-A-Roid's audio work... now to remember how to actually hold a tune!

Time for some fun away from the computer. More than a decade ago, I created a set of sixty leaflets with instructions to play ancient, medieval and early modern board games. You can download the PDFs here: cyningstan.com/downloads/529/t

Today's bugfix: fixed Raymond mixing up pupils and eyes.

The bosses shoot from their pupils.
Not that that makes it any clearer!

I did not eat enough chocolate to be rolled down the hill like an egg. I failed at Easter this year. Maybe next time.

There.. finally finished tying up the achievements.

Think that's everything actually in now... onto the bugs!

A screenshot of Snake-A-Roid showing the "Accolades" screen.
It has many accolades/achievements on it, most of which are in a deactivated colour state, with one slowly pulsing in colour that has been collected.

Just realised that driving an EV with all the braking regen on is like a giant scalextric. You even need your own vroom vroom sounds.

Really disappointed as various AI art systems graduate to full on plagiarism from their stoned art student phase, puffing away on a recreational silicon wafer with all that confidence, " yeaahh this dude has eight fingers on this hand, twelve knuckles and ninety-seven teeth!"

@Bobbins I think some of it may be fear and imposter syndrome. Certainly is with me, as I have had to fight back hard against myself to even post a screenshot, or just shout into the void on what I am doing sometimes.
It's a weird and wholly frustrating thing.
"Is my game good enough?"
Yes, brain. Shut up, get it done, and let it find it's audience.

2025-03-26

Woohoo, that's the logic for all the achievements done!

Now to wire them up to the back ends...

2025-03-26

@psychicparrot42 loaded something up on the Spectrum and hit break by accident.. and there was a load of text right there! Then I actually leafed through the speccy manual and realised this text made it do things, and there was some type-in examples to go through and it just went from there. Just as much fun to make your own worlds than to play in others!
