So I guess I am building a super computer… Raspberry Pi for scale.
Thanks Wendell!

Just released a new video where I test how much a special metadata VDEV can actually speed up ZFS.
Turns out it makes directory browsing faster, snappier containers, and a smart use of NVMe.
I built a test script, ran benchmarks, and walk through it all in TrueNAS.
@autiomaa thank you for sharing! It shows how software optimization and having the tenacity to chase things down can lead to millions saved over just throwing hardware at it!
Home Assistant to the rescue again! Just had a small leak from the kitchen sink’s garbage disposal. Notified on the first few drips!
I really like fixing bugs. There’s something about that instant gratification, especially when you get confirmation from a user and the metrics agree.
This one’s extra satisfying. Redis memory usage down, and with it, our cloud costs too!
Nothing like pushing a whole bunch of code to production on a Friday afternoon! 🚀
"How hard could a PSU swap be?"
Me, 3 weeks later:
- Trying to design custom power cables
- Learning about proprietary pinouts
- Toning wires like it’s an 80s phone line
The mini racks keep getting bigger!
So what's the play right now for Home Server / HomeLab processors? I am not really considering desktop class processors due to limit in PCIe lanes (I need more pipes vs. wider pipes) and modern server class processors are expensive.
I thought I had no PCIe lanes left — but OCuLink opened a new path.
Today, I expand my home server with more NVMe storage, put a Samsung 990 Pro and Intel Optane head-to-head, and show just how much you can still get out of a packed system.
This is a family tradition and recipe passed down from my Japanese grandmother. It’s inari sushi. It’s sweet and salty and only has rice and deep fried tofu. It’s super easy to make and we’ve always stuffed them with more rice than the traditional way. Our family calls them “rice bags”.
I rebuilt my home server from the ground up: CPU, GPU, RAM, fans, SSDs, and power supply… even some "accessory lighting". This thing is now quieter, faster, and built to handle just about anything I throw at it in 2025 and hopefully beyond.
It’s server upgrade day! It’s not just about better specs or hardware, it’s about rethinking how everything fits together. Every upgrade challenges assumptions I made months (or years) ago and pushes me to make smarter choices that will (hopefully) last a few years.
I tested 10 VGA to HDMI adapters with my Homelab servers so that you don't have to.
@badnetmask Nice. Last I checked it didn't work with PiHole 6
Tired of the Internet going down when you reboot your Pi-Hole server?
This is getting out of hand.... Now there are 6 of them!
I stopped streaming. This is my last regularly scheduled stream. Here's why.
