I'm BAAACK! After months of enforced radio silence. God it was hard, yet strangely liberating.
I bought the fabled Mid-life Crisis Car, and now I'm wondering if it's possible to die of blue LED toxicity.
Virologist Dr. Ian M. MacKay is now on Mastodon! Here is his new profile: @mackayim2022
Among many other things, he's the guy who created this Swiss Cheese COVID-19 defence graphic:
It’s starting to really get to me in the UK how many people are furiously angry about the prospect of more solar on fields when *many actual farmers* are enthusing about how great mixed-use fields can be. (Solar can shade animals and plants. In many cases, it can also be combined with rainfall capture. It’s about making better use of some land, not replacing one thing with another.)
🚨BIG SCIENCE NEWS 🚨
And our results (along with our international colleagues) have dropped!
Our team (and others) have started to see the strongest evidence as yet of the stochastic gravitational wave background - ripples in space-time cause by ALL the supermassive black holes in the history of the Universe colliding!
We use pulsars to study these riplles and we needed almost 20 years of data to even get the first hints! It's the long game!
I'm a co-author on the Aussie papers (as part of my work) but I also wrote about it here in my latest feature article on #SpaceAustralia
This is why I have been going on about pulsars for a few weeks now - this was coming!

Shattering the myth of men as hunters and women as gatherers
https://phys.org/news/2023-06-shattering-myth-men-hunters-women.html
"They found that women hunt in 79% of the analyzed societies, regardless of their status as mothers. More than 70% of female hunting appears to be intentional—as opposed to opportunistic killing of animals encountered while performing other activities, and intentional hunting by women appears to target game of all sizes, most often large game."

Effective Altruism has had a bad run lately thanks to the criminal activities of one prominent leader and the bizarre fixation of others on the AI apocalypse. But the idea is still sound.

@keithwilson My dearest friend, who shall remain nameless for obvious reasons, lost the final generation of drosophila that would complete his PhD, when the genetics building aircon broke down on a -6C night.
He pretended it never happened, and wrote it up accordingly. TBPH, I can't find it in my heart to blame him.
Hi #ScienceMastodon. We, @Dev_journal are a community journal covering all areas of #devbio. Development is led by Editor-in-Chief James Briscoe & published by the not-for-profit @Co_Biologists.

As part of a wave of layoffs, I got laid off from my backend development job last month as the company's financials I was working with have been steadily decreasing. I applied for another job shortly after, and after a month of interviews and an honestly great response from their team, at the last minute, they told me that they were focusing their hiring efforts away from the US and towards Singapore. With Calckey donations, I don't have enough money to pay for rent or groceries. So I'm asking to #GetFediHired, I'm the lead developer on the Calckey project, and I'm a fullstack, multi-language developer. I have 3+ years of enterprise experience, and I work great on teams as well as solo. Resume and references available upon request.
Soylent Blue is made of Smurfs!
Cryptocurrency was literally criminals saying "You should put your money in the Criminal Bank, we pay great interest" and then coming back later and saying "Oh no, criminals have robbed the Criminal Bank, how could this have happened?"
After some comments on here about the rusted ons, I had a crack at writing something about the whole idea of party loyalty and how it is changing in Australia.
"Both the major parties have moved relentlessly to the right, and it is probably true to say that Menzies couldn’t win Liberal pre-selection these days, and that candidate Whitlam wouldn’t interest Labor.
"In which case, what exactly are the rusted ons rusted onto?"
@lauren Totally agree on A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Delightful movie.
