Santos-Sanz+ with “JWST occultation reveals unforeseen complexity in Chariklo’s ring system” - I’m fascinated by and seeing more activity and weirdness with small bodies in the Solar system gets me very intrigued indeed….. arxiv.org/abs/2510.06366

A plot showing the light curve of a star passing behind Chariklo's rings. A horizontal line, with two narrow dips. Zoomed in panels showing the eclipses in detail show positive excursions from diffraction around the edge of the rings.

Some really interesting ideas here (pre-print) from Michael Kramer and Simon Johnston (SJ works with us!).

Unlike the conventional concept of radio emissions in millisecond pulsars coming from polar caps, could they also be coming from regions where gamma-rays are emitted?!

If the idea is correct, then somehow the theorists are going to have to figure out how to get coherent emissions from outside the polar cap (which is gonna be fun). But if so we should see more MSPs!

The ex-Ball Aerospace Tech Tower in #Boulder is coming down. Apparently the new owners BAe decided to demolish it quick before it reached protected status. A lot of spacecraft and instruments were conceived of there, including the Ralph imaging spectrometer on New Horizons.

Never believe the cloud forecast. The only clouds are hydrogen clouds ;-)

Anyhoo, Orion is back in the morning sky and therefore the horse head nebula is too!

A softly glowing red cloud of gas behind the dark sharp edge of a foreground dust cloud. Part of the dust looks like the silhouette of a horses head.

Below it sit an orange nebula shaped a bit like a
flame or upside down drop, with a bright star next to it.

As you'd expect, I also had to experiment with the Foraxx Palette for this project.

This image is a photograph of the Lagoon and Trifid Nebulae, which have been processed using the Foraxx Palette. As a result, the celestial bodies are golden, blue, and a rosy shade of orange.

I'm working through our late-summer backlog during the shutdown. We started photographing the Lagoon and Trifid Nebulae fairly late in the Milky Way season, but I'm still pleased with how the final images turned out.

This image is a photograph of the Lagoon and Trifid Nebulae, located in the dense core of the Milky Way. Both celestial bodies appear as bright, gaseous shapes, rendered in shades of pink, red, and blue. Surrounding the nebulae are bright pinpricks of light, which represent stars.
