CORRESPONDENCE
To the Editor of the "Guardian
MR EDITOR— The Wooden Church or Chapel
said by your Correspondent "ARGUS" to have
been set up in the St Catherine's Docks in the
year 1829, to have been shipped on board the
Wanstead and the Warrior, and to have been
paid for by the Government, was in reality the
Frame-work of my present dwelling house at
Perth. It was my own private property, pur-
chased of Mr Manning in London (but never set
up in the Dock,) and paid for by myself as the
bills and receipts now in my possession will fully
testify. All this Argus very well knows or might
know, but be, no doubt, wished to enjoy the
malicious satisfaction of attacking an individual
in the pay of the Government and for that pur-
pose, as he knew he could not wound his public
character with the weapon of truth, has natur-
ally had recourse to those of falsehood and mis-
representation. I am Sir
Your Obedient Servant
J. B. WITTENOOM

@david_coombe_cbr This might be the earliest example in Perth:

I knew it was a kit home, but I hadn't suspected it was most likely a Manning up til now.

@david_coombe_cbr Two of the NCOs from the 96th who left the army in WA had daughters who married sons of former VDL convict James Dyson. One of these was an abstemiousness teetotaler, the other opened a pub. Guess which one of these is my direct ancestor?

@david_coombe_cbr Next connection: The 96th Regiment. After South Australia, the detachment returned briefly to VDL then was sent on to Western Australia. Magill came to a sad end here (We do that to people)

@david_coombe_cbr Once again, you've done it again! — sparked a cascade of connections I had not made before. I knew there were Manning kit homes in Western Australia from the early 1830s, but none survive here. Henry Manning sent a nephew, then his younger brother over here to buy up property and manage his interests in Swan River. For this reason, I'm currently typing this in the suburb of Manning.

My grandmother is exactly the same. I never got to meet my grandfather but theirs was a long and happy marriage from what everyone have me. He died while they were still married 30+ years ago.
Then a few years ago she started telling us how he was now living across the street from her nursing home with a new wife and their babies — "the old devil!" she grumbled. But she wasn't too upset as he left the babies for her to look after.
Her sister-in-law was scandalized — "He was NEVER like that!" Being a former nurse, she should have known better.

I looked at it this way. She still had her memories, they just were no longer connected in any particular order. She is still quite cheerful about life.
More recently, the memories themselves faded. That includes of all her grandchildren. I knew that moment was coming. Still hurt. At least there was still some recognition, and a smile... "You're from Kalgoorlie, aren't you?" I was happy to take that.

First day back to writing after more than a month of medical distractions including two weeks of Covid 19. I'm finding maintaining concentration quite difficult. Someone is not helping.

Thank you for this! It's given me an insight. I've been attempting to find out more about an event that took place in Western Australia in 1852 that should have been officially documented but has not been. Exodus of talent to the goldfields + Influx of convicts with an expanded bureaucracy needed to manage them = administrative chaos.
Nothing provable yet, but at least I have a plausible theory to work with now.

AAAS: "Mice thrive at 6700 meters up—higher than any mammals were thought able to live," That's almost 22,000 ft, folks, mice living in the Andes at least 650 meters above above the volcanoes’ vegetation line—and sometimes thousands of meters above. "A preliminary analysis of the DNA in the animal’s stomachs suggests lichens are big part of their diet." The photo is of an Andean leaf-eared mice, Phyllotis vaccarum, with its tail held in the researcher's gloved hand. At that height in the Andes between Chile + Argentina the winds howl nonstop and daytime temperatures never get above freezing and plummet even more come nightfall. "Oxygen levels are just 40% of those at sea level, too low for mammals to live there —or so biologists thought until 3 years ago when a research team captured a live leaf-eared mouse at its summit." So, a new record for the highest dwelling vertebrate found so far. "The previous elevation record holder for mammals was pikas, a rabbit relative, found nearly 6200 meters up on Mount Everest a century ago." Some birds soar higher but appear not to dwell at those elevations. "The team has also come across five other mouse species living above 5000 meters on various mountains in the Central Andes." For the researchers at these altitude the extremely cold nights and low oxygen levels made sleep and concentration difficult and slowed their progress. Having never been higher than 14,000 ft, I can only imagine. These scientists are tough, but the mice are even tougher.

1/2 The last time I got totally shit-faced was when Kevin Rudd's Labor won the 2007 election. The totality of my politically aware life had been in the shadow of John Howard's interminable and cruelly conservative reign. Kevin '07 promised a new dawn so I got very (vewy) drunk. But my hopes were immediately dashed. Before he'd even finished his acceptance speech I'd written him off. Australia needed to re-find its heart but I couldn't see this emotionless robotic man showing the way. I leaped (lurched) onto my bike and cruised (wobbled) my way through Canberra's urban bushland to another election party, muttering all the way "Where is it? Where is the love? There is no love!"

I was right. Before his term was out, Rudd had lost his prime ministership because he was a heartless egomaniac who didn't follow through on his righteous moral proclamations. There was one exception though: the Apology to the Stolen Generations. What a humbling and vulnerable moment of contrition, of historic importance. Does Australia regret that act of love?

A great constitutional lawyer once said "It's the vibe."Though glib, there's some truth to that: the constitution is where our principles are laid out, not where the persnickitty detail is specified. That is left to legislation which Parliament can wrangle and refine over the years to come. So what vibe do you want our constitution to have? This foundational document that underlies our society? When I ask "Where is the love?", I want to find some of it in our constitution, because I want to live in a community based on love, generosity and acceptance.

At least on FB, unlike the Trove blog, you can leave comments...

Screen capture of a comment on a FB post. text of comment reads: "It's great to see an example of digital research using Trove, but it's really unfortunate that you didn't include a link to QueryPic – the visualisation tool used by the researchers. If you had included a link it might've encouraged others to explore the possibilities of the Trove API for research. The latest version of QueryPic (it's been around for more than ten years!) is available through the GLAM Workbench: https://glam-workbench.net/trove-newspapers/querypic/ There's even a couple of videos to help get you started. What's the point in sharing these research stories if you don't also share the research tools and methods?"

bug was fixed sometime during mid-morning WST, with a reply from #Trove support that it was fixed. It is a shame there is no mechanism any more for finding out if I was the only one with the issue or it was something wide spread. All the discussion groups for Trove seem to have disappeared.
