Paul Young "Every Time You Go Away" US Columbia 1985

Paul Young is a good example of the differences between European and North American markets. In UK, he is a hugely popular pop star. In the US, this is his most popular song (a Hall & Oates cover) and more often slotted in the New Wave category because of the synth heavy sound of his first two albums. He did have 5 other Top 40 hits in the US, but only one other Top 10, a cover of "Oh Girl".

A 45rpm picture sleeve above a record on a turntable. Sleeve features a seated man in a patterned suit with his hands in his pockets and feathered hair. Around him is "Paul Young" in a signature like font.

Below is a record label that shades from orange to yellow, top to bottom. Above the spindle hole in block letters is "Columbia". To the left is "Stereo" and "4:10", the right a bar code. Underneath the spindle hole is "Paul Young" "Everytime You Go Away".

"Mouseland" (1980) BC NDP

Allegorical story told by Tommy Douglas about a group of mice living under the rule of cats. Be the cats black or white, the rules always favored the cats. Until a mouse proposes one day that they rule themselves....

Douglas was premier of Saskatchewan (1944 - 1961), head of the national NDP in the 1960s, and representative for several BC ridings in the 1970s. Also the grandfather of Keifer Sutherland.

"Inside Magoo" (1960) UPA for American Cancer Society

Jim Backus' most famous role before Gillian's Island was voicing the near-sighted Mr. Magoo. Created by John Hubley, Magoo was part of what drove UPA to be so influential in 1950s animation; limited animation with often abstract flat colors for backgrounds. Here, Magoo (and Backus) educate on the necessity to have annual cancer exams, in a typically Magoo-ish manner.

just make it exist first
you can make it bear later

Mini comic in two parts.
1: "Just make it exist first" - crude drawing of a red circle, not very accurate.
2: "You can make it bear later" - the circle is now a bear's head after adding a bunch more lines to it. "Bear" on the caption is handwritten over a previous text.

It's summer, and the heat is on. This what your album rock station would be playing in the early 1980s... if they pulled music from around the world and had a bit more loose interpretation of the format. Set features YMO, Elton John, Exile, Klark Kent and XTC among others. So sit back and listen to some sounds of summer.

I feel like I will probably get more #CompactDisc s in the near future. There's the convenience and used CDs are often a good value. I'm still getting vinyl, but maybe a bit more balance going forward. I have ordered a bunch of Japanese CDs (including a new Yasuharu Konishi album from last year) recently, partially because cost, but also to try to get them in before duty is applied.

How it was taught in school:
Portuguese explorer Diogo Dias discovered Madagascar on August 10, 1500, which marks the beginning of the History of Madagascar.

How it actually happened:
On his way to terrorize and plunder India under his brother Bartolomeu’s command, Portuguese explorer Diogo Dias got lost in a storm and accidentally came into sight of Madagascar’s coast on August 10, 1500. Madagascar had been populated for over a dozen centuries already by then, and Arab/Swahili trade outposts dotted the coast. Diogo’s flotilla then proceeded to terrorize and plunder those, and the rest of the East African coast.

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 "Scarborough Fair" US A&M 1968

Sérgio Mendes came to the US from Brazil as part of the bossa nova boom, recording a few jazz records before forming first Brasil '65 as a way to promote Brazilian music, which evolved into the pop oriented Brasil '66. The songs were arranged by Dave Grusin, who would go on to form the production team and label GRP, as well as movie soundtracks.

"Flatland" (1965) dir. Eric Martin

Adaptation of the satirical novella that is also a staple of geometry classes by Edwin A. Abbot. This version starring Dudley Moore is just a brisk 10 minute version. This version focuses on a square in a two dimensional Flatland after a visit by an intersecting sphere, trying to convince higher caste polygons of the notion of up.
Based on an idea by John Hubley.
