#WordWeavers 7: SC POV: Make fun of the antagonist.

Alex: “If Cipher were worth his weight in salt, he'd spend more time hacking to save humanity rather than ending it. Who cares what some half-wit politician did to him in the past, do something about them, not every one of their people. It’s about the bad apples, not the bad orchard. Sometimes I wonder why antagonists are so short sighted. It's almost like they're all mentally unstable or something.”

There are so many great options. I’m not sure I could pick just 1 😂 I know some sci-fi people would pick Star Wars or Marvel but no way. They’re overdone, and frankly, not much fun any more. I’d want something fresher and with lots of hidden possibilities.

I’d say The Expanse universe or maybe something in The Three Body Problem. Their surface is only just scratched with lots of potential to uncover. 🚀

Kel Williams: A Victoria Sponge Cake for sure. As a UK native, her grandmother used to make her this layered sponge cake every year for her birthday. A little jam and a whole lot of whipped cream and she was in heaven.

Alex Mercer: A rich moist Chocolate Cake. No question. The more chocolate, the better.

Abigail Olivaw: Carrot Cake, hands down. A hint of spice and a rich cream cheese frosting and she'd be your best friend.

I’d start by saying one of the authors who inspired me as a kid like Isaac Asimov or Greg Bear. More modern authors like Hugh Howey or John Scalzi would also be fun. Those are mainstream trad authors, but I’d also love to work with self pub folks like Joshua James or Kyle West or J. F. Penn.

#WritersCoffeeClub Day 4: Do you have specific goals when creating a scene?

It has to move the story forward, ideally filling in gaps, or giving the reader something to grow excited about, angry about, or evoke some feeling that compels them to keep reading. If they’re closing the book, then I’m failing. The second thing it has to do is challenge the readers assumption. If they can guess what’s next or my characters are just experiencing their world and not changing it, then I’m failing.

Captain Kel Williams: I’d have to say my daughter, but before the bombs fell. I never got to see her give birth to her first child, to my… granddaughter. Knowing what I know now, I would have snuck her and my son on the Bancroft. I don’t know how, but I’d do it.

Interviewer: That’d break all the rules, wouldn’t it?

Kel: Sod the rules. When the bombs fell, so did they. Anyone who disagrees is blind.
