No.807: Pete Walker's 'The Comeback' is a British psychological slasher released in 1978 and features an American pop star named Nick Cooper travelling to the UK to work on his first album in six years.
Early on in the movie, his ex-wife is brutally murdered by a sickle-wielding maniac in a hag costume. Her rotting, undiscovered body provides an ongoing sense of tension. Nick also seems to be going mad, seeing and hearing things but is this a plot against him? If so, who is the culprit? His weirdo friend? His grizzled agent? Or his sinister housekeepers (played by the brilliant Sheila Keith and Bill 'Compo' Owen)?
This has been described as Walker's most conventional film, but I'd say it's anything but. This is the work of a superb director at the top of his game.
