Although I am grateful to have lived in a an age where the internet has made access to reproductions of artworks so much more convenient than before, looking at an image on the screen cannot, for the most part, match the experience of seeing the work in real life.*

I was reminded of this when thinking of how awe inspiring the art of Barnett Newman, Franz Kline, Mark Rothko, and Robert Motherwell can be, and how puzzling this awe might be to those who have only seen these artists' works online.

*Walter Benjamin has misled so many, but that's another story.

Going in with the scribbles today, with added watercolour powder. Trying to keep to two colours, but I have a feeling yellow might make an appearance at some point.

Playing around with lots of ink and ovals at the moment. Not sure where it is going, but it's something I'm being pushed towards

Dear Friends,
Go see the late Jack Whitten's insightful work at the Museum of Modern Art in #NewYorkCity
Arresting. Breathtaking. Too much to process in one go-around. Go slow.

A wide, time-exposure view of one of the galleries at the Museum of Modern Art's Jack Whitten retrospective. Three large-scale pieces are visible as are two smaller ones in a corner. The composition forces the eye to the center of the frame where a blurry figure vibrates side-to-side, centered before a circular composition in the artist's unique abstract-expressionist style.
