Active users looks in a steady state now, to me this is the really interesting number - is anyone auto-publishing #activeUsers from the-federation.info ?
@doggojones Indeed, the IMHO most important metric for the #fediverse is monthly #activeusers. That's why this metric is in the overview, too.
Now, there are 2.6m monthly active users, which is more than five times higher than 1 year ago (554% growth).
BTW: The highest # of active monthly users so far was 3.8m on Dec 23, 2022. This was after the last big influx from Twitter. This means many stayed active, but also over a million did not become permanent users.

Several stories lately about how Mastodon active users count is down. Yesterday Eugen Rochko @Gargron posted:
"Mastodon bumps up the active user count when a user logs on..."
This raises a question. Are active users ONLY bumped when a user logs on?
[Edit: Question answered] If you interact with Mastodon in any way (visit page while logged in, send authenticated API request) you're counted as an active user for that day.
So not undercounting.

@VictorVenema You are right. The growth of the Fediverse does not outweigh the number of users becoming inactive/dormant. Thus, the number of active users is stagnant and even decreases:
Change of "active 6 months" in the last year:
#Fediverse: 1.36Mio -> 1.21Mio
#Mastodon: 1.25Mio -> 1.09Mio
#diaspora: 87250 -> 69018
#Pixelfed: 9647 -> 12563
In other words, the #Fediverse needs to substantially grow faster in order to also grow in terms of actually active users.
Does anyone know how to interpret the following graph on #weekly #activeusers at #Mastodon? It seems to be quite shaky. The current peak is at 161k active users per week.
