i don’t think people understand the interconnection of the #adoption industry, child welfare systems, and the manufacturing of orphanhood. the overwhelmingly predominant cause children’s loss of family is not death but the state. most adoptees are people whose parents are dead *in law only.*

i’m just now learning about yet another horrendous cinematic depiction of #adoption, combining such cliches as the “bad seed” with an unknown past and (amazingly to me in the 21st century), the idea that your town has an orphanage of kids waiting for “forever homes”, like an animal shelter.

i think what i said here underdescribes the problem adopted people face. for me it has proved impossible, both before and after reunion, to talk honestly with my adoptive family about #adoption, because i have always sensed that to do that is to threaten psychic violence: to reject their love.

this passage from Nicole Chung's recent article about open adoptions stood out to me. we adoptees face enormous social/cultural pressure to voice nothing but good feelings about #adoption, lest we be sanctioned for letting our "bad experiences" "speak for everyone," or be depicted as ungrateful.
