The Nommo are primordial ancestor spirits in the mythology of the Dogon people of Mali, Africa. The Nommo are said to be hermaphroditic, amphibious, fish-like people who came from the sky to bring great knowledge. Modern myths have the Nommo coming from a planet orbiting the star Sirius.

In a West African folktale, a young hunter came across a lion playing a magic drum that made all the other animals dance to its beat. No one in the hunter's village believed his story until he returned with the drum and used it to make them all involuntarily dance.

Yennenga was a legendary African warrior princess whose skills were so valued by her father that he refused to let her marry. In defiance, she fled her father's kingdom and fell in love with a young hunter, ultimately becoming the mother of the Mossi Kingdoms.

Congo Tales is a photo series book featuring local Congolese people acting out images from their folklore.

The book contains the photography of Pieter Henket, and was edited by Eva Vonk and Stefanie Plattner. The Congolese mythology was adapted by Congolese philosopher S. R. Kovo N'Sondé and author Wilfried N'Sondé.

Congo Tales is part of a larger campaign - Tales of Us - an ongoing multimedia project that hopes to remind us on the urgency of protecting the world’s vulnerable ecosystems and the people for whom they are home by telling their stories in a new and exciting way.

It is a fun interactive talk where we get to think about what archetypes mean to us but also explore from the African perspective and hear folktales for context - Helen is talking about folktales from various places on the continent and comparing/contrasting social norms and the presentation of female agency

Way back in September, I complained that only European folk stories are being adapted into movies and series by Hollywood and streaming services.

Well, it seems that @Netflix has decided to do something about it. So here we have six beloved African folktales boldly reimagined by Black filmmakers. What a treat!

I love stories about #Anansi
I only first got into African folklore because of a white author. We see the problem, yes? While that was a good book, that ought not have been my first exposure let alone at my age

Another African cryptid, this one from the Congo. The Emela-Ntouka, or "Killer of Elephants," is a large saurian with a single ivory horn protruding from its snout. The creature is said to be related to the Triceratops but has lost its frill and other horns. Floppy ears are also frequently described..

Instead, I thought I'd have some fun and design another African cryptid that will feature briefly in the next storyline.

The Ninki Nanka is a swamp creature from West African folklore, described as a roughly 30-foot-long wingless dragon with a long neck and an equine head with three horns.
