#Airchecks

#Airchecks, slightly tweaked, from the first day of WOR-FM in New York; #rock music hits the #NYC FM airwaves -- this was the forerunner of the #AlbumRock feast/famine (depending on one's point of view) of WNEW/WPLJ/WPIX in the '70s and beyond.

At this point (I'm only about 35-40 minutes in), there's little to differentiate it from #Top40 WABC-AM, aside from the absence of black music (Miss Dionne Warwick singing Bacharach/David doesn't count, and the Ramsey Lewis Trio is filler -- I'm talking, rather, Stax, Motown, and any small R&B labels crossing over into the "white" charts).

One other difference: No static at all.

This is great stuff, for those who celebrate the mighty oaks that grew from this October 1966 acorn; for more info, including the labor strife that followed the #labor strife that delayed this debut, I'm sure there are some old Bob Christgau and Richard Goldstein columns out there on the internets.

A concert, recorded by Bavarian #Radio in Munich on January 19, 1950, featuring the Coleman Hawkins All-Stars featuring James Moody, Kenny Clarke, Nat Peck and Pierre Michelot. Truly an all-star lineup. A little over an hour, it’s almost non-stop and the sound is unbelievable for sixty-two years ago.

Nat Peck (trombone)
Hubert Fol (alto saxophone)
James Moody (tenor saxophone)
Coleman Hawkins (tenor saxophone)
Jean-Pierre Mengeon (piano)
Pierre Michelot (bass)
Kenny Clarke (drums)

From the "Guitar Music" show on #WKCR a few weeks ago: a focus on the hit-or-miss (but still nostalgia-inducing, for me) No Wave "era" in NYC.

From @PastDaily: the sound quality is often less than ideal in this Swiss #Radio #aircheck, but if you were curious about what happened to Hank Mobley after Miles moved further and further from Hard Bop, and #BlueNote fell into the hands of corporate owners, here you go....

Hank Mobley (tenor saxophone)
Kenny Drew (piano)
Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (bass)
Albert "Tootie" Heath (drums)

Any fans of #radio #airchecks out here? I got into them last year when I decided I wanted to listen to radio with commercials that weren’t just telling people to go to a website.

One of my favorites is youtu.be/smWSwzcLehU for a few reasons. #SmoothJazz is one of those genres I grew up with, and there are some excellent songs and ads on this sample.
